A prototype unmanned combat aircraft of the future, Taranis, has been unveiled by the MOD for the first time today.

Named after the Celtic god of thunder, the concept demonstrator will test the possibility of developing the first ever autonomous, stealth Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) that would ultimately be capable of precisely striking targets at long range, even in another continent.

Should such systems enter into service, they will at all times be under the control of highly trained military crews on the ground.

The 21st century Vulcan amirite?

Yes until the system gets a virus and skynet is initialized to "solve" the problem.

Check all that apply:

  • Evil sounding name
  • Terrifying visual design
  • Room filled with spikes
  • British

As far as aesthetics go, the red triangle-ish thing in the center looks very strange. It seems like it could've been much sleeker, but oh well, as long as it gets the job done.

Also, what hangar is that, and why is it so spiky? For sound or something?

Edit:

Is this unveiling on par with the B-2 bomber or something?

$10 says this project never gets off the ground.

I was hoping for another cute little helicopter.

Not much of a stealth bomber if we can see it...
EDIT: Fixed it:

would be cooler if it were manned. by pilots with darth vader masks

I thought those were rows and rows of soldiers at first.

They probably are... Looks like just a bunch of palletes with sound foam on them.

they're stupid for not spraying the pallets black! looks cheesy and I don't even notice the monstrously large UAV right near them

It has to be kept in a sound proof room. If it hears people talking it will immediately kill them.

Have the Ministry of Defence hired Sonic Team to design their aircraft hangars or something?

So after telling everybody UFO-like objects were being test-flown around the place, which made everyone all "jou crazy fool" about it. I go this thread. And I see this UFO-like prototype craft.

Yeah.

Credit Crunch my arse.

''Where can we save money?''

I know, stop building stuff we dont need.

To me it seems a little "this is a stealth craft, let us show you how stealthy it is by means of a big fancy sci-fi light show"...

it's a radar thing, to make sure that other radar signals don't come in, so that they can test its capabilities and functions.

also, Cool. Looks awesome. I wish i had a few of those.

In spite of them having been successfully test flying them for the past few years?

The Brits are kind of new to this entire wasteful military spending thing, they still have a lot to learn. But A for effort.

We're new to it? Have you seen the Eurofighter project recently? Our Apache project? Chinooks?

Honestly I haven't, but I'm sure they are cute little projects that wasted a couple billion pounds. Once you guys have projects that take 30 years and go 30 billion over budget but you refuse to cancel it because so much money has already been flushed down the toilette let us know.

Good interview on the daily show about the V-22 Osprey:

Much as I hate to quote Wikipedia:

In 1988 the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Armed Forces told the UK House of Commons that the European Fighter Aircraft would "be a major project, costing the United Kingdom about £7 billion".[36] It was soon apparent that a more realistic estimate was £13 billion,[37] made up of £3.3 billion development costs[38] plus £30 million per aircraft.[39] By 1997 the estimated cost was £17 billion; by 2003, £20 billion, and the in-service date (2003; defined as the date of delivery of the first aircraft to the RAF) was 54 months late.[40][41] Since 2003 the Ministry of Defence have refused to release updated cost estimates on the grounds of 'commercial sensitivity'.[42]

british and almost all nato countryes has spend tons of money on military stuff

Apparently this thing is tiny, only 9 meter wing span. From the picture it looked massive.
