Well, I'm buiding my a new computer for my parents use and I'd appreciate any advice anyone could offer. Basically I'm trying to stay as cheap as I can while still building something that won't go obsolete too fast. They really don't have that many needs for it, so don't require much. But I also want it to last them for a few years.

So anyway, this is a quick list of what I've been looking at so far:
  • GIGABYTE "GA-7VT600 1394" KT600 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU -RETAIL -$72.00
  • SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9600XT Video Card, 128MB DDR, 128-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "ATLANTIS RADEON 9600XT" OEM Lite Box - $138.00
  • AMD Athlon XP 2500+ "Barton", 333 FSB, 512K Cache Processor - Retail - $89.00
  • Rosewill 184-Pin 512MB DDR PC-2700, Model RW333/512 - Retail - $75.00
  • Seagate 40GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive, Model ST340014A, OEM Drive Only - $53.00
  • Samsung 52X32X52 CD-RW Drive, Model SW-252FEN, OEM Bulk - $31.00

Total: $458

What do you guys think of this? Any suggestions on better/cheaper/different components? Any help would be appreciated. Just want to be sure I'm getting them as much as I can for their money.

Oh and also I was looking at about a 350 Watt PS. Think that would be enough? Thanks.

Also that card is OEM ;o

Make sure you know what to do with OEM componants :E

You may not even need that graphics card... Do your parents play games?

I'm not exactly sure. Currently they don't, but my dad has mentioned that he may want to in the future. That's why I included it. But I'm open to suggestions for a lower end card too. I had considered lowering it to a 9200.

Yup, not a problem.

458 USD is a great deal no matter what, as long as the computer does what you want it to. SO, talk to dad, and see what he's wanting out of the computer... Then get the parts based on that. Talk to mom while your at it too! haha

Good Luck.

Heh, ya that's one of the problems. They don't really know exactly what they want. So that's why I'm setting up preliminary options to feel things out component and price wise.
