First attempt at building a Computer..

I wish idiots such as yourself wouldn't talk when they haven't the slightest clue what they're talking about. I payed for the comp myself, because I work, something you probably don't do. And I have to pay the insurance, gas, and half the monthly payments on it. Soo scratch my ass. Don't worry though, maybe if you take the garbage out for mommy she'll give you five bucks to put towards your comp.

why does your case have to be closed??

Air flow is designed to flow a certain way in your case. You can disrupt that air flow pattern and make it less efficent by adding fans in the wrong place or having too many/not enough fans.
You want to keep the air flow because places without fans need good air flow too. Not just your CPU. There are places on motherboards that get quite warm that don't have even a heatsink. Also the drives get at least some moving air when the case is closed.

If you take off the side then all that air flow just goes out the side and nothing is really passing by those components.

Also whenever airflow is irregular dust will drop and collect in the case a lot faster. What happens to snow when the wind goes through a fence? There is a big snow drift on the other side. Anytime air slows down it will drop whatever it was carring.
