Me and my friends are going to build an underground fort, perhaps get an old TV, Xbox and such. I was wondering if anyone had some tips for building a sturdy underground fort.

........

How are you going to get electricity?

Anyway, have ventilation, or your name will come up in the newspaper, in the deaths section.

Use concrete on walls, and ceilings. Don't make the ceiling too wide.

why you dont get into a sewers?is already build

They might be averse to the whole "walking around in crap" thing. I dunno.

here's a tip ..if you build a fort above ground there's a lot less digging involved

dont bury yourselves alive

-- Must be compatible with standard North American suburban building codes.
-- Watch out for underground power lines, septic tanks, gas mains, water mains, etc.
-- Access door/stair must stay accessible year round in a northern climate (presumably).
-- Power, Telephone, Cable, Water and Sewer connections are needed (probably).
-- Ceiling height? (normally 8ft.)
-- Structure must be waterproof.
-- Should the structure be built to last many years?
-- Upgrading can be done post-construction. That is, add proper flooring, ceiling, walls, separations, furniture, etc.

Good luck!

yeah watch out for the police or construction police or w/e they are.

when i was 10 a my friends and i built a fort (4 feet in the ground 2 feet above ground) and the city of seattle came and tore the wood structure out and filled our hole back up because we "came dangerously close" to gas mains. haha think if the pick axe hit the gas main that whole block would have been leveled.:borg:

lots of kids die from suffocation every year when their tunnel or snow fort collapses on top of them

Dont build an underground fort. It is a lot of work and a lot can go wrong. Try to make the rooms circular as there is less chance of it caving in. Also try to use wood planks to hold the roof/ceilings up.

But all the evil masterminds are doing it D:

You're never too old to build forts. All dictators are kids at heart.

True...well dalamari lives near me and theres a big field with a 5 foot starter hole in it.

Me and dalamari shall start to construct the underground hl2.net fort to prepare for the zombie attack. Of course we will have hidden exits for the eventual zombie break in. We will need people to contstruct backup forts that we can retreat to in case HL2.net fort becomes over run.

I breed zombies.

They eat shotguns for breakfast....

I built a couple of underground forts when i was younger.
My method was always to excavate a trench and then put overhead cover on top of a support structure (like a military fox hole)
I seriously don't recomend digging a tunel unless you really know what you are doing, you'd have to basically have studied engineering to get it right, otherwise you'll be building your own coffin.
Ventillation is a must, if anyone wants to hear about a near disaster i had in a fort i will say.

It's something you grow out of, then back into again at a later age.

say...now!

However...we cannot risk a mere board above our heads to protect from zombies...HL2.net engineers get going on the HL2.net bunker plans. We will be the last survivors. There are a few girls in our midst who will have to be kept alive at all costs for reproducing...with me exclusively since I nominate myself the best candidate for passing genes on.

.

isnt that technically a bunker? like where you test scalar wave technology on unsuspecting volunteers? ...so many go in, none leave ;(

It needs to be in a bunker, otherwise they'll leak out and destroy humanity!

The volunteers are only students anyway.

I built a bunker in my garden (my garden is fairly big) it was pretty big, had a few different rooms, wasn't deep enough to stand in, only crouch (i have a water table about a metre down so it would flood any lower down)
It had a kitchen area at the back with a cooker, ventilation and everything, one day me and my mate left the fire going, went off and did something else, when we came back there was loads of smoke pouring out the bunker and an orange glow coming from the entrance, i crawled in holding my breath (smoke gave no visibility what so ever, you had to keep your eyes closed) we went in and tried to put out the fire but the celing supports had set on fire......as we tried to turn around it collapsed blocking us in there, i was still holding my breath and running out of 02, both of us managed to push up through the structure and emerge into the fresh air with smoke pouring out...must have looked bloody strange if neighbours were watching.

You've gotta make sure these sort of things can't happen in bunkers.
Gas fires, or any fires really are not a good idea.

oh that's ok, no one ever misses students till the holidays roll in so there's plenty of time :)

i unpatiently await that game :(

Nah, I live in a rural area. Building it in the forest.
We plan on Ventallation, we'll have supports. Hell, my friend has access to a non rotting wood imitation material... I dunno 'bout it.
Hell yeah, run out an electrical cord.
We're going to test the stability of it by digging it then having all of us stand on it (If it can survive that, it is pretty safe.)
@Short Recoil: Whoa... Kitchen underground? Nah, we don't plan on having any of that. We may have a supply of airsoft guns though, depends on how well we can conceal it. Its in a private area too.

Warning: Tunnels/caverns suitable for human dwelling tend to easily collapse.

As long as I'm buried with a working computer I'll live.
I'll get electricity by just bringing out an extension cord, it ain't far from a house.

are you guys planning on having relations in that hole?

Come to think of it, my apartment (13 floors) has a elaborate tunnel system. Looks very much like a bunker.

My downstairs floor is sorta like a bunker... except that one end opens into the fresh air.
