Just saw a new S.T.A.L.K.E.R gameplay video. There when you shoot trought some wood, the bullets just pass to the other side hitting whats in the other side! That just so cool! In Half-life 2 i dont think this its possible, instead the wood just gets broken by the bullets, like seen in many demostrations.

In my opinion, Valve should include this feature in Half-Life 2. But with one twist: when you`re shooting at the wood, the bullets just gets trough, and if you want to brake the wood instead, then use the crowbar! It is more realistic this way

You can see what i mean, if you see the video at stalkers homepage.. :stare:

err... this is allready possible in HL1 (shooting through narrow brushes, that is)

I heard that you could make the bullets do anything they want... like go slow motion. Damn HL2 is going to own.

if it's not already in the gameplay, im sure its possible to mod it in.

No. Half-Life 2 is far too sexy to be compared with another game...No...No...NO! :afro:

I agree somewhat, the way S.T.A.L.K.E.R. does the physics and penetration :) are pretty cool, but I kinda like the way the boards break like they did in the first game, kinda an homage in a way, but having the bullets go through would be more realistic and make for interesting situations

i think he means see through-bullet holes? not just the bullets passing through something, but passing through leaving a 'translucent decal' of some sort. i'm just guessing, i haven't watched the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. videos.

I know that, but i dont think it does the same in HL2, there the wood just gets broken and dont hits whats on the other side. :(

Hm I think it'll do both, I don't think they'd forget something so obvious...

you never see if the bullets go thru damagewise in the videos, I think

Trust me it will hit the other side, or at least can be moded in. A lot of cs people would be pissed if it didn't.

No, he means bullets going through materials, not holes.

LMAO...best post ever! :D

ammm... the stalker is gonna be a goot game :) but have u seen thier animation?! omg it so SUCKS! it's like hl1 anim... but whats cool in stalker that the bullet weight actully counts for is distance... that makes a more realistic approch... not like hl2 that when u shoot it's like lazer beams :\.

psst...even HL1 animation pwns from what I've seen of Stalker's animation. Seriously - the way Gordon reloads the Glock in HL is far more realistic than the way that stalker dude reloads that rocket-launcher thingy.

son of a bitch, watch the e3 movies, all your answers are there... except the ones that weren't noted or anything
anyhow, my view on it, is that the bullets will be able to go through most objects easily, and not go through on others. what im most interested in is how the bullets holes will appear

The HL2 bullets are hit-scan. Not modeled like in max payne. You can't slow them down, not without a bit of mod coding, at least.

Im sure you could take manipulator style physics to make a gun the shoots bullets that are actual models. And w/ the impressive skeletal system on the hl2 characters, I'm someone will do something matrix based

Before I left Amsterdam to come home, I picked up a PC Gamer from the UK and it had tons of gameplay vids on DVD (in verry high res too). One of those vids showed those big bug thingies being controlled by Gordon and while he was trying to get around some turrets that were shooting at him he ducked to a wall. While the turrets remained shooting the bullets were going through glass, and a thin metal wall. That is about as good as the effects in the STALKER tech demo I have from the same disk. Im sure while in development that our good friends at Valve, although innovative have picked up a few things while developing the soon to be BEST FPS EVER!!! Im sure game developers see great things at every E3 from competeing companies and use little details they see in other game demos. :sniper: ------------->

The next BIG thing im sure in any Physics system used for games will be to count EACH BULLET as a physical object which interacts with the environment. This would mean:
Ricoshading bullets off tough metal surfaces
Environmental effects such as strong wind effecting the trajectory
Shooting straight up in the sky around NPCs and then running for cover would be fun
Possible (though unlikely) to defend yourself by shooting their bullets with your bullets :)
Bullets would slow down and be effected by water
Shooting through materials would be more close to realism

and going..... and going..... and going..... and going..... and going..... and going..... and going..... and going..... and going..... and going..... and going..... and going..... and going..... and going..... and going..... and going..... and going..... and going.....
Enerigzer Batteries! they just keep going..... and going..... and going.....

OMG, that was tooooooo ****in funny, you pwn! :sniper:

If you want every bullet to be a model, start saving money for a p6 5ghz!!

Well max payne has it - in a way of speaking. And works fine on a Geforce 2.

In real life you usually can't see through bullet holes in wood. The bullet just passes through the wood, with minimal loss of material, and then the short splinters that have been bent to face the direction the bullet was traveling bend back, effectively covering up the hole. The way they did it in the stalker-video was very lifelike. It didn't seem like the enemies made similar bulletholes when they shot back at you though, allthough I might have missed that.

.bog.

Bullets do NOT produce holes in Stalker, their pr guy has already answered that question.
Bullets pass through certain objects, the same way they can in the HL engine
And, thusly, the same as they can in the Source engine.

If you shot a breakable object in the stalker engine (can't remember name) its also likely to fall apart.

Neither game models holes for this purpose, but both leave bullet mark decals.

And yes, stalkers requirments are gonna be pretty high, it does take a fair amount of oomphh to put that kinda physics on the bullets.

Max Payne didn't have physical bulets affected by physics, only for rendering and effects, no actual physics were applied to them iirc

They chose not to add physics to the bullets in HL2 as a design decission and because the game is very scalable so will run on lower gfx speced pc's, unlike stalker.

HL2 aims for fun instead of realism, there will be physics but not those you see in S.T.A.L.K.E.R, but I think that can be modded.

But in the e3 2004-video, the part with the zombies, there he throws something at the wall with the manipulator, and it brakes, but the thing is, behind it it's just black.

the guys who designed stalker didnt realize that the game needs to run on people's machines today, not 5 years from now!

I just watched the E3 2004 Video again. And when Gordon is riding in his little "boat" he shoots down a missile in mid air.. Looks really awsome the way the missile acts when he shoots at it. Tumbling around, spewing flames until crashing into the brigde.

It's aprox. 8 mins into the video.
Maybe the combine can shoot gordons RPG missiles down too... could be pretty cool :)

hmm, never noticed that, though the gamespy vid is pretty porr compared to the gamespot one, ill have another look tonight.

If you shoot a rpg at the underside of a gunship, the downforce from its fans pushes your missle towards the ground. I would imagine that enemy bullets act on a rpg the same as yours do on theirs

I think that the Gamespy's video is best that is out, even better than Burning Fish's...

no, no its not, someone find this monkey :) the screenshot comparrisons between the gamespy vid and the gamespot vid. the difference is really quite striking.

Hmm, yes you can see it, you just don't notice it as you're too busy going "ooooo, purdy pictures..."
Anyway, something else you may not have noticed, about the 5 min 20 mark, don't look at whats going on, have a lok at the barrel in the background, it gets caught byy the shotgun fire from the player.
It doesn't just explode though, it very slowly starts to burn from near the bottom, and as the flames grow and start to engulf the whole barrel, it finally blows up, taking the nearby combine with it.
Pretty neat i thought.
