Will it be possible to buy two copies of Halflife2 and download from steam via just one computer but install the game on two different machines.

I'm stuck with 56k but my friend has broadband and I would like him to download me a copy.

Unless of course halflife 2 is in the shops first in the UK but usually we are about 3weeks behind the US

usually we are about 1 or 2 days behind the US actually, if that, usually comes out the same time

The release date is the same in the UK as it is in the US so we will get HL2 at the same time.

I think you can. If you order it from your computer, go to your friends house, have him copy his cache to a CD, or bring your computer too and use a lan to transfer the cache to your computer. So you did buy it and now you have the cache.

Buying it from the store is like the same way almost. Its just you dont need to download the cache if you buy it from the store.
(diffrent process of course though)

Then how do you make that "cache file" a non-warezed copy?

Not quite I am sure what you mean. To use the cache file you would have needed to have bought the game.

Use this as an example. When steam 1.0 came out, people downloaded the Half-Life and Counter-Strike cache from bittorrent, websites and where else they cound get them. They did not get them through steam.

This is exactly how I would see this working for his Half-Life 2 problem.

Another note, the cache would be useless to you unless you have a subscription for the game. In other words bought it.

After you buy a game in steam, (I think) it has a flag saying this game has been bought, (on Valve side of steam servers) so it should work for you.

So in reality the cache would not be warez...... (I would assume, once again)

impute is probably right i have got 2 accounts on 1 comp and they both use the same qcf files, so they aren't protected in any way

valve's way to protect from piracy is authentification of your account

i don't think then, they will let you play even the SP part of the games bought from Steam in offline mode, because they loose the way to authentify the user/buyer

I was thinking about this too. Then I though, after you bought the game why not have the main server thing (where data for accounts are stored) send something to the client's steam info (on their computer) saying that the game has a subscription, so it can work like that.

(hacked easier, yes) But then when steam turns on had it compair the user's info to the server's and take action if its diffrent.

That way is not that good. But it was a quick way I could think of an answer.

so if we DL HL2 from steam, we will need to DL more then 1GB right?? caus its gonne be on DVD and A BUCH CDS( like gabe sais). and the cache file is only about 1GB recommended... how will the game fit then??? and how many GBs will it be then???
dont forget, some ppl do have a DL limit, like couple of gigs/month

greetz

Sharing your Steam cache will not cause warezing deluxe, because you still need your account to be tagged for Halflife2. I think encryption will be in play when downloading HL2 via Steam.
