Subject: Hi Gabe

Hey Gabe,

i find your answering of emails from the public absolutely unbelievable! it truely is amazing.
may i throw in my 2 cents?

im very curious as to why you intend to release HL2 on Steam and at retail at the same time?
you know you have the biggest hit of the decade on your hands (a100% lock-in on that)

surely the Steam release would enable you to take all the money from the inital release and get you some of that sweet sweet money you poured into the development.

From Gabe:

Because some of our customers would prefer to buy it at retail.

In countries like Korea where the retail availability may lag, where the retail infrastructure is weak, and where a high percentage of homes have broadband, Steam will be a high percentage of sales. In countries like England, where the retail product will be available either simultaneously or close to the US release (we don't control those dates, only the Steam dates), the retail infrastructure is very well established, and where somewhere in the neighborhood of 2% of households have broadband, I'd expect the vast majority of sales will be at retail.

Hopefully Steam will mean that more customers around the world will have access to localized versions of the game much sooner than otherwise.

This adds some meat to my hypothesis that I've held for weeks now.

Looks like its possible HL2 comes out on steam the 30th, retail to follow

Since this is the 104,543 asswipe thread on the subject, I now dawn my flame suit

hes already stated they will come out at the same time, it would be biased and make a lot of people unhappy if it were available to only some people, as i am behind a firewalla nd cant even use steam

cable internet, 1.7 mbps :afro:

yea man, thats absolute poor marketing skills. Valve would loose alot of business and customers would loose faith in them if that was the case.

Steam release date is totally controlled by valve, and i'm not really sure valve want steam version to be released at the same time as the boxes versions.
So we really can expect the steam version on 30th and boxes on later november.

Iam getting this on steamwhen its out , 2.6mbit .. i love my connection :p

if it comes out on steam i'll try a one time download FOOK that subscription stuff!

I will buy the singleplayer version via steam and the collectors edition later (including MP and Editing etc.)

I've said it before and say it again, i just hope that Valve won't release the game through Steam. I don't think that they -Valve- posseses enough bandwith to meet the requirements of such highly antisipade game.

If they'd be stupid enough to do so, it'd be funny to watch it turn into other Americas Army-type-of-launch, whereby people were not able to successfuly conect to the servers for days.

:cheese:

bah!

I really hope we here in Sweden get the retail version on 30 sept... i have the connection but i dont wanna download it from steam.

If you look at the context of the statement, it's clear he means they have little control over international release dates.

Yeah, same here.

That is unless, they setup a server somewhere in Scandinavia (preferably Finland or Sweden). Otherwise, it will be too slow.

Given the Steam model, Valve should make the game files freely distributable, so that end-users and download sites can trade them. Just don't give away your serial for Steam verification. One retail copy should install the data on as many computers as you want, each able to be activated via Steam. Only problem of course is for a single user who wants to use their license on more than one box (but I don't see how this will work under the current model we're hearing about).

This confirms what I've been posting on this board for months now. Valve does not control the date HL2 appears on store shelves, the publisher does.

no, no, NO.
I think "we dont control those dates" means that they cant teleport the game directly to stores, so in some places "the retail availability may lag"
