By how much can we expect Doom 3 to speed up?

Once patches are released for Doom 3 and ATI optimizes their drivers to run Doom 3, how much can we expect the fps to increase for middle class graphics cards (like the 9700/9800 series). Are we talking here a substantial increase or just a couple of fps. Of course there is no definite answer but I'm just looking for educated guesses.

weird, I have a 9800 pro (128mb) and it runs pretty damn well.. has the odd stick every now and then, but its great.

Im up for increasing fps regardless though.. I dont think the ati patch will do that.. instead expect it to get rid of the snow issue some people are reporting etc. (I havent had any problems yet)

No, don't get me wrong, I can play doom at 1024 at high (with my 9800 256MB), with frame rate between 30 and 60, but I wondered if they could get that up to 40 and 60 :)

[EDIT]: I get a fairly smooth playing experience, that is.

I'd imagine with a complete OpenGL code re-write, there could easily be a 10+ FPS gain.

Don't quote me on this though. :)

I doubt you will see much improvement. ATi cares about leading NVidia. They don't care about us R3xx users anymore I'm sorry to say.

ati already released a driver for doom 3. I could barely run doom on the lowest settings with my 9200. Now with the new driver I can play on high 1600 x 1200 with 50+ fps. :naughty:

Yes, and I'm the guy who inspired the image of Gordon Freeman. There I gave up my secret.

[EDIT]: 4.9 did almost nothing for me, whereas DNA 4.7 gave up up to 5-7 extra fps.

I know the 60 series drivers for the nvida cards work wonders. I started playing D3 with the 56.whatever drivers :P and it ran like crap even at 640x480 on low with all the advanced options disabled (around 20 fps average). Then I upgraded and I now can run it at 800x600 with Ultra settings with all the advanced options enabled and have a nice 35-40ish fps on average.

You can't be telling the truth. That or you don't have a 9200.

I think it is funny how people playing older games (read: Counterstrike) are having a tough time with the 60 fps for Doom 3. For me, Doom 3 is buttah smooth even when it is at 30 FPS.

As for performance increases, it is hard to tell. ATI hardware will never be faster than Nvidia hardware (I'm talking the newest generation of video cards) for Doom 3. For the last generation of hardware, further change of the OpenGL code should expose some more speed improvements. Even with the 4.9 alphas, the OpenGL code has been hardly touched.

Nvidia hardware has Ultra Shadow technology that speeds up stencil shadow rendering. ATI doesn't have it. However, I imagine there should be some nice speed increases for ATI hardware in the upcoming months.

I swear, before it was choppy at 800 on low. then i installed the driver and extracted the pk4 files. I started it up using fraps and it is now always above 40 fps on high.

I want a driver that will give me an additional 500+ framerates per second while using 1600x1200 and ultra details.

Driver didn't help me... that config tweak didn't help me... something help me! ;(

Did you try extracting all the compressed files yet, it didn't do miracles like some people say, but it gave 3-4 extra fps :).
