What do you think is a better internet choice?

Cable or DSL?

Please also provide a reason.

cable, because that's what ive got and it works well. DSL's what I haven't got, so it doesn't work for me.

aren't mods supposed to read people's posts?

Alright then.

Cable, if my memory serves me correctly, is able to utilize faster internet speeds than someone with DSL. Also, if a lightning storm comes around, Cable internet can not knock out (I think)

Are you happy now?

Kind of.....

I like dsl because i don't have cable. :(

Cable, because it can reach much faster speeds. DSL can only reach about 3-5 Mbs, and Cable can reach a very high speed. Im not sure exactly how fast but its atleast 10-15 times faster then that of DSL.

I have VDSL and it says that i have 100mbps....

must be the fiber optic cables.

I woulda said WiMAX thats coming out..to bad you dun got it.. Can reach 30 miles for the signal, and can utilize to speeds 70Megabits/s. Or 8.75 Megabytes/s

Though cable is faster, though.... Though an Oc43(I think thats what it's called)..heh.. 2Gigabits/s. Not Residential stuff.

how do you check if you have Cable or DSL?

Are you joking?

if not, i can't help you. sorry.

DSL.

Cable is too dependent on how many people is using it to determine speed....Sure it can get 10mbps, but say on a afternoon it might be 1mbps from lots of people being online at that one time.

DSL is constant...main thing wrong with DSL is how far it can go, but if you can get it do.

DSL is just plain slow. I had it and could only download at 20-25Kbps. I have cable and I download at 400-700Kbps. HUGE difference.

Edit: and how everyone says "When a lot of people are online it slows down blah blah blah" yes that is true, but with the advances in technology the slowdown is unnoticable. Least I haven't had a slowdown except ONCE and I've had cable for almost a year.

Well you had sucky ass dsl then...I have a 1 mbps down and up line and I can get up to 100kbps download.

I had charter cable before dsl, but it was so laggy from everyone using it at one time in my area my dad said **** it and got dsl.

i dont like dsl that much a few of my friends have it and when i use it its slower then the cable connection in my area. I just dont think its as good

DSL

Atleast in Finland DSL is both faster and it has better ping than cable. Cable also costs more in some cases than DSL. AND the uppload speeds of cable sucks compared to DSL. Atleast over here in Finland, I dunno how it is there in the US.

For the price, Cable is much cheaper for the speed you get around here. You'd be looking for 512kb/sec DSL for 30$ while my 3Mbit/s cable is only a bit higher than 40$ a month (with basic cable TV).

Although they do offer higher DSL speeds in my area they also cost a lot more. Anyone I know who has had DSL has had much higher ping to more servers they go to than with Cable.

Now if you upload a lot then DSL would be better as they generally have a higher upload rate. But most companies don't allow you to make servers on Consumer lines but they do on Business lines (more $$). My friend tried and he got a call from his ISP asking if he was hosting a server and to stop or he'd be cut.

I haven't used cable so i can't make a judgement. But i have a 4mb/512kb ADSL connection and it's brilliant, on most servers my ping never goes above 20 whilst playing CS:Source. On our clan server it is sometimes as low as 9. Can't complain about that tbh

Cable, Because it is a dedicated line, rather than a phoneline which is not designed to have a large bandwidth ,

I'm so jealous of you! I think that it really depends on where you live for what is available to you, or what is the more cost effective package

The 100Mbps your talking about is most likely the fastest speed your ethernet card can go. Your actual DSL speed will be no where near that.

My dsl at home gets 3mbps down and 512kbps up for under $20 a month. Price to bandwidth, you can't get any better in the US. At uni I have cable, which I can't even speed test accurately because it's so stupidly fast. My speed is dependent on how fast the servers are, I can suck in data at upwards of 40mbps.

here cable is much better,

Shaw
$34/month
5mb down/128kb up
great service

Telus
$34/month
1Down
512 up
Horrible service
caps

Comcast for the win. Cable is easily the better decision and now comcast just upgraded to 4mb down and 384 up.

Yea the DSL I had did suck, the company just vanished so we went to cable. Looks like I still download faster than you though ;) .

Edit: Adelphia just upgraded their connection speed to 4Mbps as well...my girlfriend has Comcast and so far my connection runs circles around hers.

My DSL is pretty good, I get pings of about 70, and usually download speeds in the 160's, I'm fine.

I am going to be switching to Shaw soon, I have had enough of MTS' DSL service. On good days I get pings of about 100 to my favorite server, on bad days it's more than 200ms. Complete bullshit considering I am paying $45CAD/month for this connection. The only good thing I can say about my provider is that they don't have monthly download/upload limits, but I don't think I download that much anyway.

CABLE LIKE THE MAN SAID!

I prefer cable, don't really know why... I guess it's the nice cable modem i've got (terayon terajet) where as all the dsl modems ive seen so far have been crappy little USB things or flimsy little tacky-plastic routers.

Cable uses the same basic principle as DSL, the only major difference being that it uses fibre optics from the exchange boxes back to the servers (hence why theres no inteference from electrical storms).

but the people who installed it put the 100mbps sticker on the dsl modem............

it says so right ther!

T-A81-02-0231
100Mbps

No no...I'm not saying you're wrong or it's bullshit or anything...it's just funny how you put it.

"It's right there on the sticker!"

Anyways...it's funny. We created the internet and created broadband, but yet we are falling behind in terms of speed/bandwith.

Hell like in Hong Kong you can get a 1 gbps connection for about $50 I think...or was it $70?Anyways you get the point...even other countries have something like that.I know some euro countries do...

Thats just ur lan speed... Everyone knows that.

DSL, if you pay for service at the same price as cable, you get a more reliable speed. Also if everyone in your neighborhood is rich (like me) and has cable, it's sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo slow.

One more thing, vdsl is like more than 100 dollars a more and has only about 60mbps bandwidth. I'm still waiting for FIOS, gonna be a lot faster than cable and dsl.

"15Mbps Downstream/2Mbps Up Price: $49.95/month"
Almost 2 Megabytes down and 256 kBps up...
Yeah... thats a damn good deal.
Too bad it's not avalible in many places yet.

Cable wins it has a higher potential bandwidth than DSL, plus 5Mbps/512kbps and 999 channel cable for $25 beat that. (Mommy works at the cable company :)) A couple companies in my small cities have direct fiber connections to the head office so actually they win :(
