So yeah, Im about 3/4 of the way through an all nighter, and have a class in less than 2.5 hours. I have one bottle of mountain dew, so thats all the caffine I have (coffee is bleh so there isnt any in my apartment). How long does caffine take to kick in? Should I drink soon, or wait until right before class?

Im so tired that my eyes are freaking out and things get blurry when I have to change focus. I cant even tell if I spelled caffine right. Caffinne? Cafinne. No, I think I got it right.

Today I accidentally made coffee and tea in the same cup at the same time. The universe imploded.

caffeine. it only takes a couple of minutes to work i think.

There isn't enough in mountain dew to keep you awake. Get some pep pills and a strong coffee.

caffeine can take between 15 minutes to 1 hour to peak in effectiveness, depending on the person.
It has a halflife of about 3 hours
It impacts your system for 3 to 15 hours, depending on the person
It takes about 5 days to completely process it and all its byproducts. (ie. 5 days till you're "clean" again).

I recommend an energy drink like V or Red Bull.
No Doz pills are also an option.

the LD50 (lethal dose for 50% of people) is around 10 grams IIRC.

Cup of coffee is about 100mg
Energy drink is more.

Don't consume loads in a short time. I know this is bad, because when I first started nightshift work, I did all kinds of things with my favourite molecule, C8H10N4O2! :)

EDIT: If you begin "feeling" your heart beat (ie thudding palpitations) and you can't talk properly, or can't concentrate or feel completely ****ed.. then you may have given yourself caffeine intoxication/poisoning.

sugar helps as well.

sugar is no good.. it wears off really fast, and then you have a "sugar crash", where you drop to a more tired point than where you started. You're burning energy you don't actually have.

(yeah.. those sugar covered donuts are no good for staying awake)

The best thing to do is exercise and sit with a correct posture to let blood flow to your brain.

Also keep going to wash your face with cold water. It helps wake you up.

:upstare:

so you slate off Sugar, yet suggest something that is loaded with sugar.

energry drinks dont derrive most of their power from sugar, its the caffeine, taurine, inositol and gurana.

No Doz are caffeine pills.

Don't those energy drinks have something in them that is supposed to refill your "I don't remember the name anymore" supply? Some kind of hormone or something created by the liver overnight and then used up during the day.

I'm pulling an all-nighter right now!

V FTW.

buy a case.

I love buying that stuff, not just because it's tasty and good and it works, but also because of the hilarity in going up to a gas 7-11 clerk with 4 of those things and loudly saying "THESE BAWLS SURE ARE SWEET."

we sell them at my lan center, i love watching people be uncomfortable about it. a guy comes up and mutters "i want two bawls" and i'm like "WHAT DID YOU HAVE TESTICLE CANCER!?"

I also enjoy asking my co-workers about it, like "Hey guys, would you like some Bawls?"

Not much to say about this... I mean it's totally wrong but hey.

Power doesn't come from Caffeine (stimulant), Taurine (does a bunch of stuff), Inositol (does a bunch of stuff, including raising serotonin) or gurana. You don't break them down (in any great quanity at all) and use em for ATP synthesis, thus you get no power.

I just find it funny that your essentially upping metabolic activity and not actually adding anything to replace used up resources. You'll hit a sugar crash quicker than with a dose of sugar.

In the context of an all nighter, you have to remmeber that you use more energy awake than asleep, one of the key factors to feeling tired is low blood sugar, yet heavy starchy/fatty foods (BTW Donuts are largely fatty foods, not sugary ones) will slow you down as your body draws resources to process the nutrients. At this time you want food that is simplistic and easy to digest and absorb. Stuff like Pasta and bananas (my personal fav all nighter food) are fantastic, but to be honest sugary foods will keep you going, feel a bit low, just eat a bit more. You're not trying to set up a stable diet, just keep yourself going a bit longer.
