California to legalize recreational marijuana

It's only an initiative, first you need signatures, then it needs to be passed in an election, then you have to deal with federal agents who won't recognize the law. We are far from legal marijuana.

Thread title is misleadingly optimistic.

If it passes I'm going to put my Foghat vinyl up on eBay once it becomes more valuable than gold.

slooow ride ...take it easy!!! <inhale>

dont forget the floyd, that shit is stoner gold

As good as this sounds it really doesnt do anything. Colorado already did the same thing and they actually passed it. But as it stands federal law trumps local law so even though colorado citizens voted for pot to be legal it's still illegal.

It still sends a message. Sitting around doing nothing isn't helping so this at least will send the message to people that maybe pot isn't as bad as it has been made out to be. I think it's opening peoples eyes that will make a difference. Most people are convinced marijuana is a drug that kills and ruins lives when in fact it's more so the legal drugs that do that.

Although I'm against smoking, this will help the economy.
Also, less stoners being thrown in jail.

Nothing special about smoking weed. Just because Harold and Kumar smoke doesn't mean it's the cool thing to do. Enjoy your fourth!

Nobody is doing this because it's the "cool" thing to do. People are doing this because the drug war has failed and instead of incarcerating criminals they have been terrorizing normal citizens for choosing a safer recreational drug than is currently legal.

lol damn suddenly this petition is referred to as the new law? It's got a way to go man.

You keep pot illegal, yet you condone the use of cigarettes?
What has this world's governments come to?!

It's about time, but c'mon guys, it's not going to pass...unfortunately :(.

This is tantamount to legalizing rape and anarchy.

Beware your neighborhood Cali negroes, friends.

It makes me so pissed that weed is illegal. It makes no sense. They should make it a government monopoly to sell it, like they have with alcohol.

In Sweden. (And in the other Scandinavian countries too, I think.)

So are all off licenses owned by the government? Can supermarkets sell alcohol? Why do you have such a ridiculous policy?

Well, only a government owned chain of outlets (Systembolaget) can sell alcohol (that's over 3.5%). Supermarkets can only sell light beer. They created it in the 20s I think to keep control of the heavy drinking that took place and has kept it ever since. The EU wants to privatize it, but I think it's a good way to prevent excessive drinking in the population. The Finish lowered the tax on alcohol a while ago, and like 30% more people died of alcohol intoxication, I don't think we should to the same mistake here.

Making marijuana legal will give rise of marijuana business and when there's business, it'll undercut drug dealers. Which is a very very good thing, most of the violence occur due to customer-dealer problems or dealer-dealer problems. You could also throw in the medical purposes of marijuana too as a positive.

But, I can see where the social stigma of blaming the 'system' will arise. Think like this, if every drug was sold legally, there will be social conscience people who criticize how it is sold and distributed. Think about drug dealer to customer relations.

What really pissed me off was that mere months after Holland legalised it and had massive sucsess, Mr Brown and his policatically correct, health-and-safety ****heads dicided to make weed class B again. Its so retarded. Despite this, weed is actually part of the youth culture here. I can name about 2 people who hasn't tried weed (and not nessacarily out of my friends, out of everyone I know). Everyone just shares it around after class; even some of the teachers join in. So, even though it is illegal, weed is used like alcohol here amoung the youth culture :D

However, that doesn't mean I think smoking or drinking is a good thing. In fact, if you do it, I'll basically brand you an idiot for all time and try to avoid speaking with you at every opportunity.
Then you can't have many friends. Everyone drinks.

I may be an idiot, but I'm probably having more fun.

Sea, if you are over 18 then you really need to open yourself up a little, a lot of people that drink once in a while or even smoke aren't that bad. They can't actually be kind of funny at times.

If you are under 18 then good for you, don't listen to absinthe or the monkey :).

In fact, if you do it, I'll basically brand you an idiot for all time and try to avoid speaking with you at every opportunity. But you should have the right to choose for yourself. :D

so when you finally get an invite to play golf with the CEO of your compnay which means a fast track to a promotion which you fail to get because at the 9th hole you, out of principle, you refuse his offer of a $80 cigar and a swig from his flask containing 45 year old scotch ..but at least you're not an idiot

Bah. I binged all throughout high school and I'm still standing!

...barely.

There's a line between "I don't like to get wasted" and "I don't like to drink". One's more understandable to me, even if I differ in my personal preference. But if you don't like alcohol, I'd hope you'd have some experience under your belt to justify that position. It seems a lot of people here who frown on it have either never tried it or got put off by one sip from dad's beer.

I quite like the "I get to watch everybody act like fools when I'm sober!" excuse. I'm sure it can be entertaining. I'd argue it's moreso when you're drunk as well!

But I'm nobody's life coach. So let's drink to that.

I just don't see why that would upset you so much. If somebody wants to stay away from drinking that's certainly their choice. They'll probably live a healthier life as a result so more power to them.

It doesn't upset me. There can be the occasional minor annoyance of, say, buying a round for the table and having somebody turn it down. But I move past that by rationalizing that it's more beer for me.

I just don't understand it. It's their personal choice, but it's one I don't see a point to it. I'm not going to try and convince them to change. Although I won't deny a rise of indignation when somebody says "all alcohol is disgusting". That's crossing a line, and the consequences will be dire.
