So how do you guys do it? Today I called in sick because I can't hold down any food and I've been feeling sick since Xmas, so I must have caught something from my relatives.

Anyway how do you call in? At work we have to talk to a manager and today I got on the phone and it was the fastest explanation. I think I chatted for all but 30 seconds. I said something along the lines of, "I have the flu and I can't make it in"

At my other job they'd say something like, "Are you sure you can't make it in?" or "Why not come in for half a shift"

So tell us how difficult is it for you to call in sick. Is there any loopholes and do you get sick pay? I know I have about 50 sick hrs to use and I maybe call in twice a year if that anymore.

If you call in sick and they give you shit then you have a shitty job.

I just call in, say I'm feeling sick, and they go "okay, feel better". I do try to be nice and always tell them I'll check up on my email throughout the day if they need anything but usually they never bug me unless it's something important.

What's calling in sick? Just go and puke on them all and call it a day!

At my job its damn near impossible to call out. Having only 3 employees running third shift, and all 3 are needed. There are only 4 available employees for that shift, so its very straining to drag in the only available extra.

I don't even call. I send an e-mail that says "I'm not feeling well today I won't be in" and I don't come in. I have to admit a couple of times I just woke up late and didn't feel like coming in. I think I'm over that now though - but it's a really easy process for me. I think they prefer it if you call but I never sound sick when I'm sick unless my throat is effed up so it's just a big waste of time.

Generally though I don't want to put anything incriminating on Facebook as I am friends with a few managers and co-workers that are nosy and post shit all the time. Thats the one Capt Obvious thing I don't understand how people can get fired for posting shit like "That was an awesome party! I drank so much last night" and expect their boss to believe them that they're really sick

At grad school you just don't show up.

Call up. "Hi I can't come in today"
"Ok thats fine" End of conversation. My boss never asks why I am calling out.

The worst part is when the situation is reversed. I had my boss "friend" me on facebook once, I assume to spy on me, but I don't use facebook really, so I accepted, whatever. But then I saw that pretty much every time she didn't come in (which was like 3 days a week) she was posting shit like "having so much fun at ____" and stuff. We all got to joke about it at work, but its really annoying when you can't do anything about it.

Once I interned and had what I thought was an ear infection. But I just took off a couple of hours to go to a doctor. Emailed it in the day before. They didn't really care. Then they paid me all the rest of the sick hours I hadn't used when I left. Pretty nice company. Kinda boring, but nice.

Aside from that, I haven't gotten particularly sick in the past 5-6 years. No cold or flu or anything. Worst was food poisoning but that happened over 4th of July so I didn't miss any "time" (grad school doesn't really count, and I work enough late nights and weekends anyways). Just ruined 1 of the 8 days per year I get for holiday :|.

Go to work, puke and shit everywhere

Get told to go home

*fist pump*

I've only done it twice, but it was really a pretty hard thing to do, just because of the guilt factor. Thing is, at my work, they run us on the most bone dry skeleton staff possible, so really if anybody doesn't show, everybody else gets ****ed in the ass hardcore. I've had my fair share of shifts where I had to pick up the slack cause some asshole that calls in sick every other week did it again, and i'm always the guy they run to when they need somebody to come in on their day off/extra early to cover for said asshole, so I don't do it unless I really REALLY have to, just cause I know how it feels to be on the other end of it.

Thankfully the place I'm working at now would be understanding enough and completely sympathetic and I wouldn't feel bad at all speaking honestly that I'm sick and won't be able to make it in. The only thing I'd be worried about is trying to catch up on the work lost once I get back into work.

My boss is great, and is a human just like me so she understands that people like herself get sick and simply can't come in without jeopardizing everybody else.

If you're legitimately sick and your boss is smart, they should understand that if you're in they will have an employee that is not going to be working at maximum efficiency and also stands to get others sick which will cause a cascading effect of lost time. Staying home is the best option.

But if they're a dick and want you to work even though you're sick... then well, they're a dick and you're royally ****ed.

The one time I was working at Zales, I was working for about a week and a half or so, and they had me do something different down in a different part of the building. I was having to disassemble filthy shelves and there was a lot of dust in the air and after I got home I felt miserable. The next day started what would be the sickest I have ever been in my life... with a very bad case of walking pneumonia that required antibiotics and ridiculous amounts of sleep. I had to basically be out from work for about a week and a half, and still felt like shit when I finally went back in.... all because of an illness that I got working on the job. Some bacteria in that dust must have gotten me sick, since that was the only correlation I could see and it seemed damned plausible. What'd I do? I couldn't do anything else other than call the temp agency after hours line to tell my temp agency supervisor who could then tell my Zales supervisor that I wasn't going to be in for work because I was sick. It sucked, honestly but I did manage to get back to work for all but another two weeks before I had to quit for completely different reasons.

Get up.

Feel sick.

Go to work/school anyway.

Work productively as possible while suppressing all desires for rest.

Manager/Professor sees you, and recommends that you go home.

Deny need for home, work is my only desire.

Manager/Professor commands you to go home.

Worry out loud about pay + grades.

Manager/Professor tells you not to worry, you won't be penalized.

Go home.

Play WoW and SC2.

This is basically my sick day cycle.

God damn man, hell I'm thinking of taking off tomorrow just so I can have a 5 day weekend. :/

Dang, Numbers has an awesome prof.

Once in high school, I'd gone to school kinda-sick, started feeling really-sick, and went to the nurse. I'm sure I looked totally gross as I was literally carrying around a full-size box of tissues constantly wiping my nose, but the stupid nurse said I didn't have a fever so I was prohibited from going home. After that, if I were to go home anyways, it would've been considered being delinquent and skipping school.

Then I go to my last class of the day and I need my teacher to sign a form for me. This teacher happened to be germophobic. He made me hold the form down for him while he signed it so he wouldn't have to touch anything I had touched. Then he scolded me for not going home and I was like, "AUGH I wanted to but the nurse wouldn't let me."

Terrible school. Only really nice teacher was this Indian dude who gave me a hug for being sick and showed us videos of his wedding (it was Hindi Culture class... and he was Hindi) and sold us cheap bootleg copies of Bollywood movies.
