Looks like the cop might be a big fat liar after all:

"She went on to tell me that she observed what appeared to be two black males with backpacks on the porch of Ware Street," the report says. "She told me that her suspicions were aroused when she observed one of the men wedging his shoulder into the door as if he was trying to force entry."

This is from the police report posted above. Well today they released the 911 tape and the caller never said anything about 2 black men nor did she ever talk to the cop. The cop lied in his report, plain and simple.

Gates comments were totally un-necessary, and in my view he wished to incite racial hatred.

You dont know what his comments were. The cop making the report has just been proven to be a liar.

Gates has a history with the Harvard police department as well for the same shit. He does this to himself then tries to take advantage of the situation by pretending the police are racist. He's done this more than a few times.

No Limit: Not all cops are racist...it's true.

A lot of cops get off on the authority. It's why they became cops in the first place. So when someone challenges that authority, they get their feelings hurt. They get pissed and then they arrest someone for some bullshit charge like disorderly conduct.

Was the guy being an asshole? Probably. Is that illegal? No.

Once they had verified that there was no crime, they should have just ****ing walked away. But no, they felt challenged - and rather than do their job they decided to "show him" and arrest him for some bullshit. This shit happens all the time and if the guy wasn't a respected professor you'd never have heard about it - and the charge might have stuck.

Gates. Just because he's black does not mean he can't be racist. The officer acted completely within protocol, Gates took it to an unnecessary level.

I didn't know you were there. Perhaps you could let everyone know exactly what was said so we can clear this up.

Oh the irony:

I never said all cops were racist, I never even said this cop was racist. But it turns out a lot of cops are liars, including this one.

You're right, many cops just plain suck. But many good ones are pissed on for doing their job. Neither of us have the exact details of what happened but you cannot dismiss the large possibility that gates was just being an absolute dick hole to the police, who were only there to make sure nobody was breaking into his house. This man thrives on creating racial tension, there really is no denying this.

But that can be denied. Did Gates over react? We don't know, you are simply assuming that he did because of what the cop said in his police report. But we now know that atleast on one detail the cop has shown to be a liar. How do we know he didn't fabricate other details?

That's not to say that I know that Gates didn't over react because I don't know. But I certainly won't believe the cop.

sure he overeacted ..as would I if the cops try to bust me in my own house (get the **** off my lawn narc!!!). there's reason why so many people dislike police... and it's not exclusive to people of other races. I had the "oh so you dont like metal heads with long hair" excuse ..and looking back at it now I was probably correct most of the time

There is no reason to over react. Is it not understandable that breaking into a house might look incriminating? The cop's presence is surely justified. All we have to work with is what gates said/did, which is really his word over the cop's.

To me this is a dead issue unless somebody comes forth with some other kind of evidence. I see it as a loud-mouthed and racially motivated individual trying to get a rise out of the police. I wouldn't be surprised if his motive was to be arrested either, it served it's purpose in bringing a lot of negative attention in regards to the conduct of police officers.

Interesting.

I don't know if he has some place to hang his hat on, and I do not see the purpose of him making this up, in his report...but what I do know is that in the Police report, Crowley said that when he arrived at the scene, ms Whalen was there and identified herself as the person who made the 911 call, and crowley reported that she told him 2 black males were forcing entry....

I just listened to the tape, where the dispatcher is calling for someone to go to 17 ware street, possible B &E...

The Entire tape is 4 and a half minutes long, from when the dispatch began and Crowley is calling for a WAGON.

crowley asks the dispatch to have the caller come to her front door...the dispatch says the caller was a witness and not in a house....this was at 1:18 seconds, at 1:31 seconds crowley comes back on and says to "keep em coming" this guy is being uncooperative and could you please call the Harvard Police dept too. That was 13 seconds after the dispatch said that the witness was not in a home valerie!

Please, explain to me how, crowley could have interviewed Ms. Whalen and gotten all of the information from her that he reported getting in his police report before going up to the front door...like the 2 black men as suspects, and using the shoulder to push in the door, in 13 seconds? Because at 1:18 she told him that there was no house to look for the witness and by 1:31 seconds he has already spoken to mr gates and already knows he needs the harvard police?

At 2:13 minutes, Crowley calls in and lists Henry Louis Gates, Jr as the person inside the house.

So in less than 1 minute, LESS THAN 1 MINUTE FROM THE ARRIVAL OF CROWLEY, HE HAS MR GATES'S ID, IN HIS HAND.

so much for everyone, including mr crowley, implying that gates was UNCOOPERATIVE...

LESS THAN ONE MINUTE FROM CROWLEY'S ARRIVAL at the Gates home...I'm not shouting with the caps, just EMPHASIS...

WOW, this is HAPPENING VERY QUICKLY....don't you think valerie?

At 4 minutes and 21 seconds Crowley is asking for the WAGON to be sent....Gates is already under arrest, or he already plans for gates to be arrested.

What do you make of that? Didn't it seem like in the police report of gates, where we now KNOW he lied in regarding talking to whalen for any length of time...no more than 5 seconds, if at all...while he had an entire paragraph on the conversation and approach to the house???

Here is what Gates' side of the story is...this is the first that I have read of it and it appears that Gates may not have been acting as "tumultuously" as Crowley said which would not surprise me since he has lied already about whalen in his police report....and Crowley REFUSED to give Gates his id...which is illegal in massachusetts...crowley was required BY LAW to give gates his State Police identification CARD....made specifically for this purpose...
crowley is one lousy cop who doesn't know the rules, or he does know the rules and was messing with gates anyway....

At this point, there is no other way I can think...

This afternoon in an interview, Gates said he never yelled at the officer other than to demand his name and badge number, which he said the officer refused to give. The officer, Sergeant James Crowley, said in the police report that he did state his name. He also said Gates unleashed a verbal tirade, calling him racist, telling him that he did not know who he was messing with, and threatening to speak to his “mama” outside.

“The police report is full of this man’s broad imagination,” Gates said in response to a question on whether he had said any of the quotes in the report. “I said, ‘Are you not giving me your name and badge number because I’m a black man in America?’ . . . He treated my request with scorn. . . I was suffering from a bronchial infection. I couldn’t have yelled. . . I don’t walk around calling white people racist.”
Gates continued, “I’m outraged. I shouldn’t have been treated this way but it makes me so keenly aware of how many people every day experience abuses in the criminal justice system ... No citizen should tolerate that kind of poor behavior by an officer of the law. . . This is really about justice for the least amongst us.”

Because of his arrest, Gates said he plans to make racial profiling and prison reform central intellectual and political issues he wants to explore. He’s also considering a new documentary on racial profiling.

“Because of the capricious whim of one disturbed person . . . I am now a black man with a prison record,” Gates said. “You can look at my mug shot on the Internet.”
