Can 8xAGP card go in 4xAGP slot?

I think it may be possible it just the 8x rating will go down to 4x, or you could always consult your manual.

My 9600xt did...even though I didnt realize my slot was only 4x until a year after I got the card :(

Okay cuz at the computer store they told me it would destroy the motherboard. I didn't believe them, but I still wanted to make sure. Stupid people trying to make a sale

As long as the gfx card says 8x/4x your good. The 9800XT even worked in a 8x/4x.

8x cards can be set to run at 4x with only a barely noticeable performance hit, so I would imagine it would just limit the AGP speed of the card.

In fact, using 8x mode can actually cause problems, so many people run their cards at 4x regardless. I have a 9800 Pro (8x) in a 4x slot and it works fine.

its when you go to 2x when you want to be carful because i belive there is a voltage change

But if the AGP slot uses a different voltage then the card wouldn't fit in the first place. There would be a notch in the wrong place to prevent such a thing from happening. ;)

Well you would have to check the actual box. Some boxes will say if it can support both 4x/8x. Some don't offer this capability

Who in the right mind would still have a 2x and try and play HL2?
