can a motherboard use ide AND sata harddrives at the same time?

Well i've got an Asus a7v8x and i've got it running right now with two IDE drives and one SATA drive, so i'd say it's possible on atleast my motherboard. But it seems as though as it would work on that motherboard too.

On every motherboard it is possible. If your motherboard doesn't support raid, you can buy a raid controller.

You can have as many drives as your controllers allow.
Every PC has 2 (P)ATA controllers which use IDE cables. You can fit 2 drives per controller (master/slave). That's a total of 4 Drives.

SATA is one drive per controller and many have 4 SATA controllers. That's a total of 4 Drives as well.

That would be 8 drives possible if you had all of those controllers. Now you just need a case with enough space to hold them all. :O
Sadly, I actually have a full tower with 6x 3.5" bays and 6x 5.25" bays, on wheels no doubt.
