my card is named GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X
it has 128 mb ram
it has integrated RANDAC (whatever that is)

and dont flame me....just wanna know if i need to buy a new card to have the best settings...

..Btw besides the Gfxcard i have the most kickass comp evah

A Geforce 4 MX is worse than a Geforce 3. Sorry to tell ya. :(

I could be wrong, though.

If you feel like upgrading your 3d card, go ahead you will only get better results but I think you should be fine with the GF.

Really?

Oh Balls.

Good job I was planning on upgrading at Christmas.

Cant it run the best settings even when it has 128 mb?

please answer that.......and if not..what card should buy...and how much will it cost?

Buy a new card for best settings

Wait till september, or whenever the game comes out, and buy the hottest NVidia card (you could try ATi if you want but i like NVidia)

The FX cards are expensive paper weights.....go ATI

It wouldn't even matter if you had 256MB on that card, it's the GF4 MX core that's holding you back.

Ya GF MX's are for people who don't really play computer games. They are really cheap cards....

Yes the Geforce 3 64mb is better then The Geforce 4 MX 128mb

If I were you, I would either get a top of the line Geforce 4 Ti4600, or get a ATI 9700 Pro

TI 4600: US price is about $200-170

R 9700 PRo: is about $280-260

Just because 128 seems like a big number doesn't mean that it'll work fast. 128 MB memory means that there is 128 MB (NOT mb) of MEMORY for storing textures etc. It says NOTHING about the feature set of the card, the rendering pipelines, the speed of the memory, etc.

A GF4MX is basically a just a GF2.

GF 4MX is basically GF 2MX on steroids. It doesn't support DX8 instructions so you will miss quite a lot of cool gfx from HL2 (like water effects)

Gabe Nevell spoke to me from heavens (OK, he answered my mail) that max detail HL2 will run in 30-40 fps on my rig
(P4 2.0, 512 MB RAM, R 9600 Pro 128 MB RAM).

Best upgrade to GF 5600/R 9600 (cheap option) or GF 5900/R 9800 (expensive option).

Wow, it will run on max on that system, thats cool!

I'm going to be in heaven if I just upgrade my RAM and get the 9800... I already have a GF4 ti4200 but I can't imagine playing HL2 without the full gfx.

ok to answer your question, the game will not look very good on your card. buy a new card. you cheap fool. BTW is your "uber computer" a dell, they tend to make good systems then stick crappy gfx cards in the,

I can't believe you actually emailed him to ask him that... no really it's beyond the boundaries of smacktardland.

No I don't think so. Many people mailed such questions. Many want to upgrade their hardware in anticipation for HL2, and without a demo, we are unable to tell how te game will run. Gabe solved my dillemma and saved me some hard cash, as I believe he did for many others. Smacktardland happens if you mail them with "o0o y00 s00ckerzz D0omm ]I[ will ownZ y00r azz" kind of stuff.

Guess you're right Gud, my apologies. But it still seems to me that Gabe will commit suicide from the ton of emails he must get everyday. I'm just worried for his health lol :)

your G-force 4 is a good stable card. I had one when i was living back in Autralia. It was bloody awesome to game with at the time. I would give it a go. See how the game runs. Only if it is running really shit would I'd consider an upgrade. I'm on GF2MX atm. So I basically have to upgrade. If I had a gf4 I would at least give it a try before throwing the towel in on it.

OMG i have a GF4 MX440 with 64mb and its SUCKS sooooo much im saving up money now so i can get a fly video card right before hl2 comes out ... i would suggest you go the same

Edit: i cant even run battlefield 1942 and i have the card overclocked

ya, i had a GeForce4 MX440-SE!!!! but now, the heavens opened up, and PNY didn't forget the motherboardly chalenged (aka: no AGP) and handed me (i had to hand the heavens $118 back but...) a GeForceFX 5200 (not much of an improvement, but i'll get most of the hl2 eye-candy cause of the DX9)

Get R 9200Pro and above. Your card has to be DX9.0 fully, so you can turn all HL2's features on.

I am going to upgrade in 2.5 months, getting 9900pro with 256MB.

waiting = winning

Hmm, I've got the same card and I've haven't had any problems with games.

I'm going to be buying this, soonish: http://www.pcnextday.co.uk/product_detail.asp?stype=5&productcode=1530-1100&group=AGPAT&pgroup=VID because it's in my price range.

If you want to get technical a GF4MX is basically a GF2 GTS with an added Transform & Lightling engine although a rather limited one at that...

BF1942 will make any grfx card cry if the comp doesn't have enough RAM. My computer has a geforce3 but only 384 megs of ram. (1.7 gig p4). I've found that the SP runs at 25 fps regardless of whether I max the graphics settings or not...its my RAM holding me back.

No prob Para. I think Gabe has some mail filtering software that stops mails who include words "delay" "release date" "n00b" "haxxor" "Doom 3" and "anti-aliasing".

Well If were him I would do something like that ;-)

someone@valve to gaben@valve:
Gabe! We just found a massive bug you need to help us with! Get over here, and don't delay!!

*filtered*

i'm sure if it were that urgent, they'd call him, cause he only checks his mail at 9:00PM, or so i'm told

I have a GeForce4MX 440 (not SE), and not only that, but it's a PCI version of the card. This card is so bad, partially due to it being PCI. My GeForce2 MX 400 was MUCH better than this card. Again, I can't compare to yours because I don't know how much of a performance hit this card takes from being PCI, but either way, I wouldn't have bought this card had I had a choice. . .And I didn't: No AGP slot :-P

I'm upgrading my motherboard, powersupply, and getting a Radeon 9800 (np), so I won't have problems when the game comes out.

Hah, you all think your mx cards were bad, try playing anything on a radeon 7000. It came with my comp when I bought it about a year ago and it sucked HARD, it didn't have T&L, it was slower than a dying snail (it struggled to get above 30fps in hl mods, anyother game made since 2000 and it was like watching a slideshow), and I had many problems with it. Fortunately, I've upgraded to a 9700np, and I have no complaints so far (except it fried the agp slot in my old, crappy mobo :D)
