Can someone enlighten me on what is Freespace 1 & 2?

I don't mean just a game. I can obviously see its a game. I don't want to go look at some cold, heartless website. Maybe you guys can share your experiences on what you think the game is/was, and whether or not its worth still picking up to try despite it being 5 years ago when it was released?

The Freespace games are some of the best space simulators around. Still look damn nice for being a few years old, and they have a good plotline, too...

If you can get them, they're worth it...

Freespace 1 + 2 contained the largest, most epic space battles ever commited to a computer game. I think Freespace 1 might be the most immersive game I've ever played. Some of the missions are the closest thing you're gonna get to actually piloting a ship in Return of the Jedi's space battle. Those two titles are the pinnacle of the now defunct space combat genre.

1 was cool, i borrowed 2 and couldn't remeber if i even completed it.

on playing it again, i see i don't remember it cos its a anti-climatic end. I think starlancer is way better

I tried the demo. It's very fun. I was wondering though, do you ever get to fly in larger cruisers/battleships/juggernauts? That's where I wish some of these space sims would go! Instead of always pitting you in some kind of fighter.

By far the best space sim there will ever me, no one does them anymore, as they know they will never hold a candle to freespace, there very good games, big missions, and alot of them, tons of weapons, medels to win, great storyline.

edit: You dont just use a "fighter" as there are to many types to really call it fighter only, you can be a bomber and order your teammates to defend you as you bomb warships etc, lots of fun.

freespaces 2 is nearly impossible to find (and trust me, i've tried)
I bought freespace 1 and the expansion pack as a jewel-case combo at Target years ago....

But yeah, it's a great, great game.

I didn't get the expansion pack, I had to piece together the story from the background stories in Freespace 2.

Freespace 2 is actually "freeware" now, you can download if off the net... (no I'm serious, its not illegal as in warez). Cant remember where though, I didnt have the bandwitdh back then to download it, heh.

Want to try something really fun? Try to find Tie Fighter Collectors Edition. The Freespace type sim was just a rehash with stranger aliens, this game is the true epitome of space combat with a story (and in a Star Wars universe that is really sweet), voted best game ever by many magazines. Of course, its archaic by now

tie fighter was excellent! actually, it IS excellent. when will lucasarts learn that all they have to do is graphically overhaul the old school simulators they have (fully 3d, etc) and they will one of the most powerful franchises out there.

Yeah, if they just redid those games with all new graphics and maybe some extra missions I'd definitely buy them again. Especially X-Wing.

Freespace 2 is one of the best space sim. game I've played, truly magnificent. Freespace 1 was also very good, but I liked the second a little more.

I f*cking love the beam cannons in FS2, especially the Shivans. Beware of the Juggernaut.

The SCALE of some of the ships in FS2...still amazing. flying along a shivan juggernaught the first time...

shoot, when the first big shivan shivan ship came out and blew up all the ships I THOUGHT were big in seconds...that was impressive...

then I destroyed that ship...

and then the shivan juggernaught arrived from the mist...and was like 20 times as big. WHOOO MAN!

Freespace 1 & 2 remain the pinnacle of space shooters for me and one of my favorite games of all time. Wow.. amazing games. Nothing draws you in like the last few missions of Freespace 2. The utter desperation is dripping from the missions. You can sense it.. if you fail, we lose. Awesome games.

And yes, Tie Fighter was great as well. I remember it having some great MIDI music.

I got freelancer awhile ago, its pretty damn good, its alot more arcadey then freespace, if you wanted a sim on how it would most likely be really like to be in a space war, freespace is your best bet, as its got alot of detail too it, freelancer is more point-and-shoot, but still very cool.

Indeed. I hope that htey make another 'classic' era Star Wars space flightsim using todays engines. The possibilities are endless. Imagine how good they could make X-Wing Alliance usung Source or the Doom 3 engine.

I'd like a Freelancer type game, totally open ended but based in the expanded star wars universe where you could buy and upgrade different types of ship, from the archaic Z-95 Headhunter all the way up to the New Republic E-Wing .
