and to use this thread rather than making another one for a similar problem here's another question:

with the cd version, i think i can install it on 2 comps no problemo, right? and then i can only play onlone with 1 at a time unless i get a second cd-key, right?
just checking cuz that stuff is sort of obvious but i'm not too clear on it...

whats the difference between that and backing up ur files?
lets say i back up my files and bring them home to use on my home comp
cant i just install using my steam account and start playing?
i need to preload on that actual comp?

Because using the method you describe, you could make 1000 copies and let 1000 of your friends all play on their own computers.

Why do you think people are trying now to hack it, and remove the authentication? So you can do what you describe.

You can copy it, and put it on your own computer, but you will have to authenticate, and you're the only one who can play it. The version on your other computer will not work.

So you can't use your Steam account on the other comp? I was under the impression that you could register the CD key (god knows what happens with preload) and then play HL2 on any machine you wanted, although only one instance could be logged in at any one time. That's what the Valve info thread repeatedly stated...

Heh, glad I'm only using the one machine... but considering that my Steam is dying, that's not much of a plus.

i thought the same, but i guess u cant do it because steam checks the pc u are running steam on it the same one u unlocked hl2 on, if its not then u have to go online and unlock it again for that pc.

it must make u do this or the whole unlocking to stop warzing would be pointless because u could do what u said, and i expect there is a limit on the number of times u can unlock the game on different computers within a certain time
