Today in english class we recieved some actual letters written by american students as part of a cooperative project between my school and a school in florida. I found these letters (more close to emails so meh, teacher had printed them all out anyway) kinda hilarious, Ill post them here and can you find the factual errors? No scandinavians please :)

Note that names are removed for mercy.

Also note that I post all letters, some of them does not even attempt to provide facts (those are the most intelligent ones IMO).

American number 1
"Well, Sweden is a country where people don't speak English, but they try to learn. A lot of Swedish people like to dance. They dress differently then us in the IS. In Sweden they are known for making goat cheese and I have also heard that the Women are VERY tall."

number 2
"I am sure that Sweden has many different holidays like we do. Such as we have Christmas, they start there's Four Sunday's before Christmas Day and ends with the 20th day of Christmas. They also have a celebration known as St. Lucia Day, so you can see that they have different holiday's and traditions."

number 3
"When Americans think of Sweden and its people, we think of small, skinny, and pale. We also think of guards in tall black hats. We also think of Swedish Meat Balls."

number 4
"The Swedish people have high taxes and come from the Vikings"

number 5
"The thing I know about Sweden is that its Cold all the time. They don't have many homeless people and very nice ski resorts. They also have heavy accents, bad cheese, and really expensive and good choclate."

number 6
"From the responses we read from the Swedish students yesterday, I come to see the opinions of their students. Taking English as a second language, they did very well presenting their views on hip-hop, fat people in America, and a bit on the current war on terrorism. With that knowledge, I can honsetly say that they know more about American than the students in this class. It's embarrassing the comments of my peers made to their responses, but it does reflect the ignorance of the American youth."

number 7
"I don't know much about Sweden but I would like to find out many facts about it. I know that the language spoken is Swedish. Is Swedish a hard language to learn? Since Sweden is located in the artic circle, the climate must be cold, but in the summer's does it warm up? The Swedish standard of living is said to be one of the highest in the world. Is the population low becouse of the climate? What is the government system? Religion? City life? I would love to know more."

number 8
"Sweden is a beautiful country according to my mother who once visisted. I know that Sweden is a part of the EU, its capital is Stockholm, its government is a constitutional monarchy, and its prime minister is called Gorah Persson. Timber, hydropower, and iron ore constitutes the resource base of the economy.
I know some Swedish musicians such as ABBA and the Hives. 1/2 the population participates in sports and the two main spectator sports are soccer and ice hockey
As exemplified by the Nobal Prize, Sweden is a leading nation in the field of education and has 33 institutions of higher learning.
Some of the drinks and foods include Kottbullar, Julskinka, Ham, Absolute Vodka, Pommac, and Enbarsdricka. The juniper is a fruit and it looks like the purple grape."

number 9
"I don't know much about Sweden except that you are located in Europe and you speak Swedish. Let's just say that I am pretty ashamed of that. I don't know why we don't learn much about Europe and if we do its only for a short time and only about a few countries like France, Italy, England and Germany. Then we move on to Central and S. America. We never learn about places like Australia, Sweden, or even Canada and its right there! I would definalty like to learn more about Sweden and not just accept what I hear on TV as life really is."

And even then they think Wales resides in it.

Bastards.

Hahaha! Thats funny. I think number 6 has the right idea.

And now I feel that much more ashamed to be an American :p

...........

;(

Whoa how old are these kids? I have friends in the.. eh.. 'lower echelon'/resource classes and they definately know a lot more about it. Or else it's just Arizona's schools puts a lot more emphasis on geography (Including culture/governments of them)

If they do suck ass don't take it as America's schools, but as that state's schools. We're seperate enough in at least that to differentiate by it.

83 percent cannot find Afghanistan

76 percent cannot find Saudi Arabia

70 percent cannot find New Jersey

I love "Here be dragons"

hahahahaha... "smelly people with big hats"
but seriously, some of the public schools here in the states are reeeeally bad. it's awful.

Sadly, ignorance is not limited to the US anymore. We in the Netherlands have a healthy dose of it as well, all thanks to our wonderful eduction that emphasises the training of 'learning skills' instead of accumulating knowledge and understanding. God forbid our history classes should deal with what happened in the past.

That's... fascinating. I've also heard that Swedish 12-year olds know the US geography better than American 12-year old. When my sister lived in the US, a guy came up to her and said "If you're from Sweden, howcome you aren't black?"

LOL! :afro:

Yes, the 'anymore' might have been a bad word to use in that situation... I don't mean it that way and take it back. I love you crazy Americans.

I've become convinced that stupidity is a human trait, not an American one. :D

This reminds me of the part on the film "Super Size Me" where they tested Grade 1 kids on what symbols and faces were recognizable the most.

lol, some kid thought Jesus was George Bush. and the other's coudn't guess at all!

I went to primary school who couldn't find Irland on a map of Yurop

lmao! That is priceless, seriously brilliant. It sure is a scary insight into the type of people who vote for the leader for the remaining superpower. I'd rather not think about it :)

I can't say that I enjoy being put under the title "American". And I would have to agree with all the other people here... A large percentile of Americans are oblivious. They don't know much of the world outside our country. A lot of people do... but most people don't. Makes me wanna punch people in the face.

I keep saying this: The americans just have better media. Or maybe they just like to show that they're stupid. Maybe they're just pretending so they can firebomb the hell out of us.
