Is there anyway to prevent other players' sprays from being displayed onscreen? Some of them are just plain obscene, mainly consisting of some porn and crude language.

This does not bother me all that much but I have a 9-year-old you likes to watch me play and wants to try himself. However, I am reluctant to let him try because of this.

Also it would be nice to be able to disable chat so these messages would not be displayed while he is watching/playing as they are generally full of foul language.

If it's not possible then I'll live with it, but any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm not sure about the spray myself...but that is why it's rated M you know. So 9 year olds don't play it. Don't think they would have that much fun anyways considering they wouldn't be very good and would end up dieing instantly.

I wouldnt suggest letting a 9 year old play it either, considering it is both player conduct, language and sprays that make up a bad influence, not merely obscene sprays...

regardless, I think the command is CL_allowdownload 0
and you wont download people's sprays.. I could be wrong though.

He has only watched me for about 5 minutes till I saw one porn spray and that was it. Now until I can disable them somehow I won't play anymore unless it's later at night after bedtime.

Hopefully there is a way though.

I guess everybody has to know their own kid. Mine is well adjusted and was one of only two 3rd graders last year at his school to make A honor roll and is in gifted education classes this year. He realizes that it's just a game and doesn't take it seriously at all.

Thanks, I'll try this. Is this a console command and do you use it after or before you join a server??

this stuff is guna get to your kid no matter hard hard you try to keep it away... :sniper:

I think you can disable text chat with hud_saytext 0 or something like that.

You let your 9 year old SON (only teenagers should be playing games you know) watch you pelt enemies right in the face with a sniper rifle, spewing entrails all over the ground... and you're afraid of him looking at someone using something like goatse as a spray? There is no difference, you already corrupted the kid's mind :rolling:

yep disableing text is hud_saytext (with out the 0 just hud_saytext)
Don't know about the sprays..

Yeah, I realize that. Just like I have 7-year-old twin girls and knowing that one day around ten years from now some horny teenager will be trying to get in their pants. As you can see I truly have much bigger worries than my son seeing a few curse words and some nude women but I'd still like to postpone it as long as possible.

For now I can only raise my children the best way I know how and hopefully they will make more good decisions than bad when they come of age.

Thanks! I'll give this a try as well.

hud_saytext and mp_decals to 0

only downside to decals is that u dont see bulletholes or blood splatter anymore.

Are we playing the same game? This isn't Doom 3 for crying out loud! All you get are a few blood sprays....I don't see entrails, dismemberment, skulls splitting, etc.

And like I said in an earlier post he realizes it is just a game, nothing more, nothing less.

And as far as corrupting his mind...um I don't think so. I never let him play any game by himself and I'm always there to explain things or if he questions something. If I think it's over the top I won't let him play period and in my opinion the visuals in CS:S are not over the top.

Up to you of course, but I wouldn't let my 9 year old play a mature rated game no matter how well adjusted he is.

Does mp_decals 0 turn off the sprays?? I think that's what you are saying anyway.

And another question, do I do this before or after joining a server??

TBH I haven't let him play it and he has only watched me play for about 5 minutes. I'm actually still debating it. If I could actually use these console commands to turn off blood spatter, sprays, and the chat messages then I don't think it's M-rated anymore and I'd consider letting him play it.

Like I said, it's completely your decision. I was just giving my opinion on it. I don't mean to step your toes or anything.

yes mp_decals pretty much gets rid of anything in the is put on walls or floors or ceilings. (ie blood, bullets, spraypaints, etc)

Those are client side commands, it really doesn't matter when you enter them. Alternatively, you could manually edit your config.cfg file and add those lines.

I tried these and they worked great except it's "hud_saytext_time 0". The default is "hud_saytext_time 12". The mp_decals 0 worked as typed however you still see bullet holes and bloodspray.

There is actually a bloodspray command in the console but I'm unsure if it works because I set it to 0 and it still shows it. Any ideas on that one??

Inappropriate sprays?

/me looks around and pretends to know nothing.

LOL when i was 9 i was playing alot worse Games. BTW Iam 15. And For ahardy668 lol Your one Wierd Daddy

cl_allowdownload 0
cl_allowupload 0

to stop chat press esc during game, to to player menu and mute everybody in the game, no one will be heard then.

I think you guys are misleading the question, it shouldn't matter what he does with his son, he came here to ask a question, not to get his judgement reviewed.

cl_show_bloodspray "0"
cl_show_splashes "0"
mp_decals "0"
r_decals "0"

Normally in the full version, when you press ctrl in spectator mode and go in the lower left hand corner options, you can disable the chat text from there but they haven't implemented that yet.

And for the record I watched my older brother play doom when I was about that age and I never turned insane or crazy, I just like to play FPS games that's all. :)

There are also commands to disable blood and gibs.
violence_ablood 0
violence_agibs 0
violence_hblood 0
violence_hgibgs 0

The first two are for alien blood that i guess is only in HL2, but try these.

These work but when I add them to my cfg file they only remain for the current session.

cl_show_bloodspray
cl_show_splashes
hud_saytext_time

If I quit the game and return it's back to default and when I look at the cfg file the lines are gone. Is there any way to make them a permanent part of the cfg file?? This is true for any lines I add myself.

The ones below are already present in the cfg file. When I change these they stay.

Go to your directory that contains your config.cfg and copy it. Rename it to autoexec and open it. Delete all lines in the document and add what commands you want executed when you load up source.

If that don't work, go into your config and add the line "exec userconfig.cfg" and put your config as read-only. Then rename your autoexec to userconfig

That should sort it. May i add without the players abusive remarks , porn sprays and blood this doesn't make this game 17+.

As you said, your son isn't an idiot and can determine the difference between reality and computer games.

Have a good time fraggin' with ya son :D

Thanks for the good information. Setting it to read-only worked but I lost my in-game sound....whatever that's about.....but I'll get it worked out.

man yall are pussies. i was playing doom2 when i was 8.
yah it scared the shit outta me but i didnt turn into a psycho path.
ugh
give us 9 year olds some credit ;)

You can turn off voice in the options can't you? Under Voice?

I don't know about Source, but I know 1.6 the command is voice_enable 0 to turn it off....I have it set to 0 always.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their help, what a great community. I now have CS:S configured like I wanted it.......no blood, no foul language, and no obscene sprays.

I think I'll let my son try it out tomorrow for 10 or 15 minutes and go from there. (He's been bugging me for 2 days)

Thanks again for your help!!

9 years old. Counter-strike. Guns. Killing. Blood. = Expect the child to commit criminal acts by 14 years of age.

Push him away from the computer monitor and sit him down infront of Power Rangers: Megazord Generation.

If it works anything like 1.6, just put the settings in a userconfig.cfg file and it will load those every map.

Don't listen to people telling you how to raise your kid. I think the #1 thing you can do is be involved whether it's sports, video games, or current events -- kudos on that.

Thank you. Many problems with kids today is their parents don't know what they are doing. I know what mine watch on TV, what games they play, etc. If I feel (key word I) that something they are doing is inappropriate it stops, end of discussion. Too many parents let kids hibernate off to their room, closing the door behind them, for hours and have no clue what they are doing. I know what mine are doing and that's all I care about.

And to the poster a couple of posts up talking about my son committing criminal acts by 14.........get real. This sounds like the same government drivel that was at it's height back in the days of GTA3 when everyone was blaming video games for the world's problems instead of looking in the mirror at themselves.

If my son commits criminal acts by 14 it will be because I let him go over to friends house I know nothing about who may be a bad infuence.........or I take him to the mall and drop him off to spend 3 or 4 hours with his buddies doing God knows what.........or I let him spend hours at home or in his room by himself unsupervised.........or..........well you get the idea, it's up to me, not a stupid video game.

Yes, because video games have such an effect on a normal mind. Please, if they effected people that much, then I would be running around on a small dinosaur, jumping on turtles, eating shrooms, and making out with a princess.

!!!GAMES DO NOT TURN PEOPLE INTO CRIMINALS!!!

I, Like most people here have been playing games since they were very little, I remember playing very bloody games before I was 9. And did I turn out to be a criminal/rapist/murderer? No, Im now 20, go to college, and have a wonderful relationship with a beautiful girl.

If you are F'ed up enough to commit crimes based on a video game, I hardly think its the video game is at fault, theres more issues at play there. Thats just a case of people trying to place the blame somewhere else. In this day and age, no one ever takes responsibility for their own actions anymore, It's sickening.

Heck, my son when he was 12 introduced me to UT, then the mod INF (much like CS) He's killed me so many times I think he's gotten it out of his system!. He's a great kid - He loves shooting (when he was twelve he shot my mossberg 12 ga (one round, he said the pistol grip hurts - should have used the birdshot rather than the magnum shells :D ) Now he's a great young man, he'll have his associates degree when he graduates high school, and can now only occasionally kick my but at Halo and UT2K4 MUAHAHAHA). In my experience video game violence's affects on kids deserves a Mega "bah"
