and I just read the article, and its disturbing =[ The internet doesn't cause this crap but it sure does a fine job of getting these sick freaks in communication with each other. They should be isolated, not grouped, ugh.

since staying on-topic would mean talking about the cannibal, i'll happily go off-topic. just wanted to let you know cyber, that the influenza shot doesn't give you a cold, technically it gives you a very mild case of the flu. they are different, in case you weren't aware. and usually, a mild case of the flu is a small price to pay to be inocculated against one of the worlds more prolific killers (especially in some of the poorer and more densely populated parts of the world).

ah yes, the flu is in fact caused by a virus whereas the cold is usually caused by a bacterial infection. two very different things seeing as viruses aren't alive whereas bacteria, well, are alive. since viruses are nothing more than dna or rna enclosed in a protein shell, while bacteria carry out the functions of "living" organisms such as metabolism and consist of carbon-based organic materials.
so what is the purpose of the virus? why does it exist? does it exist to live? but it's not alive. to reproduce, to perpetuate itself? what does it care; it's not alive. so basically viruses are little suckers with meaningless existences, woo hoo.

and the flu sucks, especially when you've got it a couple of days before the sat. great fun. and when your school recirculate the air and spreads it around... ah more fun for all.

yes, I realize this timmy, as that is how people gain immunity and whatnot. But saying "gives you a cold" more closely references lewis black's comedy bit, and lewis black is a very funny man. And I don't htink I'l be dying of the flu anytime soon.

oh and, nice try styloid, but i think i was surprisingly sucessful in leading the off-topicness. but then again, i am awesome.

also, the cold is actually casued by a virus, dfc05, not a bacterium. the bacterium (a strain of streptococcus) is a secondary infection which causes the sore throat. the strep bacteria are always in the throat, but they get all opportunistic when the cold virus (rhinovirus) infects and kills the cells lining the throat and mucous membranes.

i think most people now hold that viruses are not alive. while they only meet one of the 'requirements' for life, reproduction, it is the most important criterion, (although they can't do it without parasiting the celluar machinery of a host). i read a book a long time ago called something like "viruses: on the edge of life" about that. the question of whether viruses are alive or not is pretty interesting! :thumbs: keep it up, let's stay off-topic.
