Cannot connect to server

Everytime I try to login I get an error somewhere to the effect of "Could not establish an internet connection or the servers are down. Please check your connection and try again." I know my connection is up because I'm surfing the net. What gives? Anybody else getting this and if so, what's the fix?

oah reboot or set ur pc date to the day u installed steam and try it again and again,,,,

I have rebooted many times to no avail. And I'm not sure what you're talking about, changing the date and such. I'm not going to monkey with that because, I really doubt that's going to do any good.

I have same problem as u do Doc Brass... Sucks.. I never been able to connect.. :/

I had that problem today, after a while it went away. I think it's another Bandwidth issue.

500,000 Users signing up in a few days is quite a lot.

lol i cant believe how valve underestimated the needed bandwidth...rofl

They lost some content servers prior to the Launch. At one point during the beta they had 2.5gbps and when they launched they had 1gbps.

Yeah.. I noticed that.. Not sure how that happened. ho hum.

I am having the same problem on one of my machines. I can get steam to work fine on my main unit. I try to connect on my other machine and it says the same thing as post #1. But I can go right online and do anything. WTF? I checked the ports on my router, i even gone as far as completely removing the firewall. When that still didnt work i uninstalled and tried again. Now I've tried long enough time to just say the hell wit it. DIE STEAM!

If you look at the status page the servers are numbered, there's 1-10, then 26-32. That's nearly 1/2 the servers that aren't there, unless they just numbered them with a big gap for no reason. My guess is they'll put them up for HL2, so the bandwidth should double, maybe more if there's some missing after #32.

Hopefully Steam will be fixed after a couple of weeks or so, even though i dont like Steam right now and i cant understand why they didnt just upgrade the beta to be more stable.
But there is probably something that stopped them from just upgrading the bete.
I have been a beta tester for Steam quite a while and i remember when they released Platform 9 (not sure if it was this but i think so) then almost the same thing happened, from being very stable to being quite unstable with Steam not starting etc.
