Cannot restore saved games

Cannot restore saved games after a certain point. I just made my way through Ravenholm, met Father Grigori, got to the entrance to the pit with a lot of headcrabs on the bottom -- and now, whatever I do to restore any game saved after this point, the game crashes without any error message.

Tried to delete files from SAVE folder, both manually and using Delete function of the game, tried to reinstall it -- with no effect. Also I verified game files using steam:// link -- everything's fine.

The .sav and .tga files are physically present on harddrive, and I have enough room there, so that shouldn't be the case.

Configuration:
ASUS A8N (latest drivers)
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
ATI Radeon X800XL (latest Catalyst)
Memory: Kingston ValueRam 1GB (ran memcheck for a day, no errors whatsoever)
HDD Seagate EIDE 200GB

HL2 Saved Game Problems

If you haven't sorted out the problem by now, check that all the files in your saved games folder are NOT 'read-only'. If they are then uncheck them.
