Can't complete HL2

I’ve been playing the Steam downloaded version of HL2, and all was well until the final “Dark Energy” chapter. I completed the final trip to the top of the spire, but was just not able to take down those gunships before time ran out on me. After many tries, I figured I would just start a previous save, and do the run again. I would be able to go faster, and pick up enough time to be able to take out those ships.

Now however, I’m unable to get into the elevator to start the run to the top! I’m in the control room with Alyx, and she says “get in the elevator”. Yeah, right. I CAN’T jump over the threshold onto the elevator platform, no matter what I try. The game just won’t let me do it backwards, sideways, or any other way. It’s bizarre, because as I said, I had already done this on the first run, without a hitch. I’ve gone back as far as the previous chapter, played through, and hit the same issue at this point.

I finally opened the console after reading about it here on the forum, and used the “noclip” command. This gets me on the elevator, but then the graphic cells break apart and overlap, and in the middle of this visual chaos I’m still standing on the elevator platform, and the final sequence with the gunships starts! Turning off the “noclip” command keeps the graphics in one piece, but doesn’t let the game proceed. I still hear Alyx behind me saying “get in the elevator” and it doesn’t move.

Any suggestions for a work around on this? I’m playing Episode One now and I’m as hooked as ever, but I would like to find a way to go back and finish HL2 properly.

The trick is no to suck!

There should be those glowing balls you can pull down with your gravity gun to shoot at the gun ships. Thats all you need to do.

Just ignore the gunships, you're supposed to be shooting at the teleporter before he (Breen) teleports.

Yes. Do not shoot the gunships. If you're quick enough, you can finish the game before the gunships even arrive!

You only need your gravity gun and the energy balls.

no shoot the gunships if you don't they will pester you while you are trying to attack dr.breen

If you attempt to destroy the gunships, you will lose both time and health which you could be focussing on your objective. Avoid their fire and hide behind obstacles when they're shooting at you and you should be fine.

Thanks for the tips everyone! They will serve me well if I can get this sequence started by crossing the threshold into the elevator outside the control room, as mentioned above. I don't have any previous saves that allow me to do that, so that is the issue that I need to solve. Is there a command in the console besides "noclip" that will let me move into that elevator without breaking up the graphics? Thanks!
