All of a sudden I can't connect to any servers in steam! Whenever I try to connect to a server it just sits there after 3 bars in the loading screen. Also, when I try to bring up an new server list it says it cannot contact the master server or something to that effect. is this a widespread problem, perhaps with the steam servers, or is this just me? Aslo, same problem with DoD. I can load lan games and put in bots, but not connect to anything else. I can play online games for other games, every other aspect of the net works for me.

Could be your firewall, ive noticed with my firewalls, whenever a game of mine updates, i have to tell the firewall to allow the game again, and CS recently had an update i think, thats the best i can help. Good luck

I don't see how this could be it, I've never had to do anything like that before for any other updates or anything.

OK, do you have your windows firewall up and running, or any other firewall such as zonealarm?

This happened to me, my windows firewall did not let me connect because hl2 was not in the allow section, so after an update i had to go back into settings and tell the firewall to allow hl2 and css through, other games still worked such as unreal tournament and Call of duty, but i had to "re-allow" hl2 and css, try allowing it if you havent already, thats all i can think of.

I don't have any firewalls running as far as I know, and I certainly haven't turned any on. And windows doesn't have any on because I'm still using service pack 1.

I've found that being behind 2 routers can block you from connecting to servers (yes, I've tried it).

If you're not behind 2 routers and it's not a firewall issue (which you said is not the case), then I'm not sure what it is :upstare:

If you are behind 2 routers I would suggest connecting your computer to the router that's directly behind the modem

well, I might be behind a router and a splitter from one of the router connections, but it has been this way for ages and I hadn't had any trouble.

You could always try hooking your computer up to the router and see if that fixes it, if not, then I hope some others on these forums may be able to help you out. Anything's worth a try if there's a chance that it'll solve your problem

well, i brought my laptop to school and tried steam from their connection, and it works fine, so now I know that it almost has to be my connection somehow.

make sure in the bottom you select the game you want and you dont have anything typed in the maps section.

I got it fixed. While I was busy with school stuff for a week or two my dad did some stuff. He tweaked a setting called MTU in the router's firmware. He had to do it to be able to download something for Tax purposes cuz it was due last week. He remembered, and when I reversed it all was well again.
