I checked the FAQs/Monro sticky and ran a search but I guess I'm using the wrong wording but I just built a new PC and ran a backup of my old HD and want to transfer all my games to the new HD. I know there is a thread here explaining "HOW TO" but I can't find it. Can someone post a link. I don't want to go thru dialup hell again. Thanks in advance!

Confused? ... :O

We joined the same month, too.

lol

Didn't get it til I saw your name! Man, with that many post...you got to know how to help a guy out. Any ideas?

Actually, I have around seven thousand posts. An angry moderator got my post count though.

The only thing I can think of is copy and pasting your entire steam folder over to your new harddrive.

I was thinking that but my concerns if any of Valve's stuff is in the registry then that won't work. I know darn well there is a thread here somewhere cause I remember seeing it but the search function has been no help. I would have thought the step by step procedure would be in a sticky or at least FAQs. Maybe one of the Mods will have pity on me and post the link.

Y helo thar confused person :p

Here is a link to the Steam Support Page about game backups: Link

A word of advice: DON'T remove the backup files from your original computer until everything is fully working on the other, because a faulty DVD can really ruin the party, let me tell you that :|

Thanks!!!!!!!! I'm getting the new mobo, cpu, ram and 8800 tuesday from Newegg so I'll run a clean/valid Ghost backup to my USB external drive. That way I wont have to worry. Just needed to know the best way but thanks for the advice! The sheer thought up using dialup to Steam gives me nightmares. I spent hours and hours to get Episode One to 100%. It would take days for all the games.

What I personally would do is just reinstall Steam on yer new HD, log in, then close steam and just transfer all yer GCF's from your old SteamApps folder into your new one.

Yeah.....prior to your post I was trying the backup steps from the link and its just like loading the games from scratch via dialup. 1 hour est. time just for Lost Coast:angry: Hell just logging on to Steam account took 14 minutes!!!! I knew there had to be a faster way. If your suggestion will work then my regisrty concerns are moot and I should be able to copy the Valve folder from my ext. HD backuo to the new HD. I'll first try )after I install all my new components) a straight Ghost full restore. It propably won't even boot because of all the new hardware but if it does then I can use XP install repair to fix everything...if not at least I tried. Otherwise I will for sure use your suggestion. Damn dialup!:flame:

thanks dekstar

The only registry entries you need to worry about are the steam programs registries. Like someone said above, simply reinstall steam on the new HDD login, let it update, logout.

Then copy all your files across, login, play.
