Can't get the game to install

One of my friends has been through two CD's and cannot get the game to install.
Everytime he does he gets and error about a file missing in one of the cabinate files (I cant be more specific than this as I havn't actually seen what he has done)
Anyone had any similar sounding problems?
Oh second question how much disk space does the DVD install (NOT the steam download) take up? Both with and without CS:S
If you know how much without HL2DM installed that would be great but I suppose the people without it are becomming rare so...
any help appreciated

Don't know about your problem but if I recall correctly the install was a little over 3 gig with CSS. That's about all I can help you with.
