Can't install/run HL2

I got HL2 years ago when it came out and played it almost all the way through on my old PC, which is now dead.

I bought a new PC yesterday and tried installing my old HL2 on it. When I click the icon for HL2 it just brings up Steam. I tried re-registering but it says that my product code is invalid.

How can I play HL2 on the new PC? Any help appreciated, ask any questions that I can answer that will help. Thanks.

You need to log in to the account you originally tied the CD key to. Then you can just redownload the game.

Your product code can only be registered once. It has already been registered - by you, when you first got the game. It cannot be registered to another account. You need to remember your login name and password you created when you first got the game. That's why it said "IMPORTANT: You need to remember this login name and password, write them down" when you created them.

Steam has some sort of support process I hear for people...like you, so you could search for that and give it a try too I guess. I would imagine you'll need some sort of proof of purchase and probably the disks, box, and CD - all scanned or photographed or in a similar format that both demonstrates your proof of ownership and is easy to email to them.

Be prepared to spend a fair amount of time updating Steam and the game. Like many hours to a day, depending on your internet connection speed.
