I didn't find a similar problem discussed on the forum, so I made my own thread.

I'm having quite the problem over here. I just bought and started playing Half-Life 2 for the very first time yesterday. I enjoyed every bit of it but everyones gotta go to sleep some time, right? So I saved up right around the end of Chapter 3 (by the looks of it) and went to sleep.

Today as I was eager to resume my game, a huge disappointment awaited me. :(

Starting the game and loading, everything went fine. However, as I started playing I knew something was terribly wrong; at first I thought it was just an accidental bug but it appeared to be more and more frequent:

Enemies have stopped engaging, I found many standing still on ground and even floating in air :O and the same goes to friendly people! I can't interact with anyone, I even went all the way to the "swamp-boat-thingy" beside this girl (with a fuel-tank of some sort in her left hand), in hope that everything would be alright after completing the chapter, but I can't go on unless this girl talks to me (or so I believe).

It's as if no one can see me or that some command has been activated automatically without me knowing it, allowing me to roam the game as a "spectator" only. It's really strange. It seems like everything has lost it's string for action and doesn't know what to do.

What's even more strange is that I've encountered lots of fire-barrels being thrown at me, rockets crashing down into the radioactive swamp and walls being broken, all the events happen when I pass certain points. How come that works, and not the AI?

I've uninstalled the game, backuped the "save" folder only (to make sure that I didn't copy any command-innstallments whatsoever), deleted the remains of the game folder, restarted my computer and searched the register for remains of Half-Life 2 and installed the game once again. This didn't help at all. I made a last attempt as to remove the saves and starting a new game, but even that didn't work.

I'm all outta clues. Someone PLEASE help me, I REALLY want play this game! It's the Half-Life 2 Collector's Edition DVD. I haven't installed any patches. Could this be the source to my problems? If so, where do I find patches?? I can't seem to find anything that doesn't link to Steam when I search for it on Google.

I'm really looking forward to a solution to my despair.

Feel free to contact me on e-mail at [email protected]
Thanks on advance! ;)

The only thing I can think of would be that the DVD you purchased had a corrupted file or two in it. To get past this, you can right-click on Half-Life 2 in Steam and then find the option that will verify the integrity of the game files. If there's a corrupted file in there, Steam will download the proper replacements for you.

Also, there are no patches that you need to install manually for games on Steam. Just make sure Steam is set up to update your games and Steam will find everything and install the updates for you.

You will need an Internet connection in order to try the above possible fixes.

If these don't work, report back here. :)

illegally obtaining the game is most likely your problem - pirate pwnage!

on the slim chance you have a legit copy - pull down the console and type in ai_disable 0

Solution is really:

sv_prison 1 followed by 'quit' in the console.

repeat whenever needed :smoking:

Why is that a problem? Steam will update the game, incorporate updates and validate the integrity of the game content files by going to the game properties. Are you not using steam or something?

Why is this clown still here? And can we ban Uldaman and delete his post please? I don't think we should be letting the solution to making the pirate version work be on the boards.

Uldaman's solution will not work even if he has a pirated version. It's a big problem thats not fixable. Anyway, because he's obviously signed up under those reasons, he's not being left alone.

With regard to the original poster, i would love for him to take a screenshot of his game with him using his AUX power bar, but it must be near the top. Only then i will begin to look into helping him. Also he must explain why steam is a problem to use. If he offers reasoning to both of these we will review this problem. Until then, we wait his his reply within 24 hours. Then comes the pain.
