I have a Radeon 9800 pro, and am running Win XP SP1. Im trying to update the drivers, but windows seems determined to not let me. The instructions tell me to uninstall my old drivers, restart, and then install the driver. However, after i uninstall them and restart, windows automatically installs the old drivers again. There is no way to cancel it, as soon as i log in the "add new hardware" icon appears in the taskbar and says it detects my radeon and automatically installs drivers for it. Ive tried just installing them without uninstalling the old drivers, but it still uses the old ones. What can i do?

Click cancel on the new hardware window when it pops up. You have to click cancel 2 or three times before it will go away.

Theres no cancel, or any buttons for that matter to click on.

Does it actually install the software and whatnot and is it displayed in the add and remove programs? If not then it may be fine. Most of the time you really don't need to remove the old ones unless you are having problems or get problems from not removing them. The auto recognize and installation hardware thing is the only drawback to XP when you want to use your own drivers. Most of the time Windows will just recognize it and install the generic drivers for it

Thats my problem, it installs the old precached drivers automatically. And it does install everything; ill go to the add/remove programs box and it will show the ati driver is installed. However its a driver from 2003. :x

remove teh drivers

dont restart...

reinstall the new drivers

restart

Andy :)

what version are you cats?

are you sure it wont let you just install it? are yuo choosing the express option?

Andy

Uninstall, restart, install new drivers, restart again? I either do it that way, or uninstall, install, restart; All I know is I had the same issue as you and it works now.

ive just thought... try uninstalling, restart and boot into VGA mode press F5 on keyboard during boot. should leave as default settings... then try installing drivers...

before you try that tho... uninstall the drivers... go into device manager... remove the 9800pro (both primary and secondary) then try reinstalling! then reboot

The Cache would be windows temp dir. I don't think this will solve your problems but delete everything in
X:\documents and settings\UserName\Local Settings\temp (for XP)
X:\windows\temp (for everything else)

Ive finally gotten the driver installed, but now i have another problem. I cant get the ATI Control Panel installed! Right before it begins to copy files, i get an error message that says SEVERE: RegDBDeletekey Failed. Then it starts to copy files like it normally does and then asks me to restart. After restarting, the control panel appears in the taskbar like normal. But when i go to the display properties box and click advanced, none of the advanced tabs show up, like smartgart, opengl, etc to where i can change settings. What can i do?

Yes, i used that program and i was able to install the driver, but im still having problems with the control panel.

try redownloading the control panel driver. The one you downloaded maybe corrupt.

tried it, didnt work. I have been told however it may be a registry error, and i need to use some kind of registry cleaner. Any suggestions?
