Today mother and I went to Hay-On-Wye to get a couple Tom Sharpe books. We parked up in a disabled parking space (because my mum has a disabled badge for her neck) at the top of a hill. I apply the handbrake and take it out of gear (as always), then we went to get books and a cup of tea.

We get back to find the car had rolled down the hill and rammed another car, which in turn hit another. The back of our car was severely damaged, and the car behind us probably needs 4 panels replacing.

Instantly got my camera phone out and started taking pictures. I knew it wasn't me (I was driving) because the car had just passed it's MOT, meaning there was nothing wrong with the handbrake, and we were standing outside the car when it was parked for 3 minutes before walking off. It didn't move an inch in that time.

So anyway we call the police on my phone and they take about 10 minutes to arrive. This one police man, who clearly didn't want to be there was already in a pissy mood before we had even said anything. He actually said (and I quote, nearly verbatim) "I don't care what happened here. I'm putting it down as an accident, not a crime."
So then he asks if it's drivable (and I don't want to touch it in case of prints), but I get in and notice this:

It's in some random gear (looks like 4th - wut?), the handbrake was bent like some douchebag was kneeling on it to get over the back seats (all doors were locked except the boot, and even then we couldn't tell if it was forced entry because the back is so ****ed up. Boot is slightly open though like it wasn't properly shut by the intruder), and the radio is half-way out (That thing can't be dislodged in an accident - you need to press down a good couple clips, and I can't even get it back in now). So I took a picture and went to tell the police officer. Guy said (again a basic quote): "I don't care, it's still going down as an accident."

So yeah. Really shitty day. Luckily just got word it's not going to affect the insurance.

Discuss, or tell tales of your own annoyances with the police force.

What? Get his name or something, report him for negligence. You have photographic evidence of a break in and he obviously doesn't care.

S'what I plan on doing, but unfortunately the entire powys area is pretty much done by a small police force. Chances are they're going to be the same as that guy.

So... what was actually stolen? Sounds like a pretty half-arsed job. I can honestly picture the guy getting the stereo half way out, noticing the car's already half way down the hill and legging it. :D

Yeah that's the funny thing, nothing that we can see was stolen. He must have climbed over the back seats and kneeled on the handbrake, causing it to dislodge, and while he was taking the stereo out is when it must have started rolling back.

As further proof that the handbrake wasn't worn enough to make the car roll, after we got back I went to a pretty steep hill a little way from our house and applied it. Didn't budge an inch.

As long as you don't lose money over it, it probably won't matter if they call it an accident or a crime. Although I agree, that the police officer seems a bit of an ass.

Except because it's classed as an accident, no one's looking for a douchebag that likes to steal things.

I doubt they would've found him anyway.

But maybe that's because I doubt the police in my country would've succeeded in this; maybe in the UK they're more effective in these scenarios.

99% of cops are like that.

welcome to the world

sry bout your car :(

That's real life people for you. This guy seems a bit worse than most though. A bit.
