I think the car models in HL2 are irrealistic.
Consider this.They got the seats,steering wheel,brakes,doors,gearbox...
In the real life these cars would be taken away bit by bit.
I can post a photos of real post-apokalypse cars,if you interested.

Irrealistic.
It's a word now.

No, but seriously, I think Valve's better off with unrealistic cars which you can always drive, than cars which could be destroyed, which would force you to have to walk the remainder of the map.

Also, i think you misunderstand the meaning of apocalyptic. If you really have genuine pictures of a post apocalptic car, then they pale in comparison to either your time machine, or space ship that can travel the gallaxy...

Why did you bother registering on this forum for 4 lines? At least say something insightful.

Did you notice how the blood in Half-Life 2 didn't really look like human blood? Or how everyone's head is strangely squaretangular in Half-Life?

er, ok

but the first thing I think about when I think "post apocalyptic cars" is Mad Max's car, here's a reproduction (it looks from the outside like the one in the film)

and here's the jalopy

They look kinda similar to me (well, in body. If the jalopy had a complete chassis, I think), & anyway the jalopy looks more like it's been "taken away, bit by bit". I've not seen Mad Max in a while, so maybe he has no gearbox, seats, stearing wheel etc.

I doubt taking apart cars bit by bit during a totalitarion alien invasion is really on the top priority list for either the Combine, or the resistance.

Anyways, I'm sure using most automobiles were deemed against the law after they invaded.

Cars need gas... To make gas, you need oil. Surely combine took away that resource... Not much point in scrapping car parts when there's no gas to run them on...

.... So you are agreeing with me? Lol, the way you word it makes it sound like you are trying to prove me wrong.

Your version of post-apocalyptic implies that there's no form of government running the place. Thus anarchy. Thus people running about stealing bits from cars.

Agreeing with you, especially on the 'against the law' part. Disagreeing with the OP though...

Also, in the game it did not seem like people were allowed to have that many personal belongings, much less car parts inside their homes. Hell, car parts, they didn't even have doors on their bathrooms...

maybe that's what all those oil canisters lying around are used for?

Hence why the cars are run by the resistance.

You insipid person, the rebel cars were made from random parts they took from other cars. They aren't off-the-shelf models.

You mean the entire two cars ever made by rebels? Oh, and a boat, yes :p

Hey, combine may be evil, but no one said they were efficient at it.

Woah you guys just slammed the op.

I thought his post was referring to the cars lying around the city, in which case he has an interesting point. There would probably be alot more car-shells lying round.

I would assume the combine have a better energy source than oil by now...
Oh right, those energy balls, OF COURSE! The Combine don't need oil.

But they need water.
About the cars:the two cars were entirely made by rebels, and they used the parts from the other cars lying around like a sand. However,I noticed that the other cars are almost complete, they just a bit smashed or don't have the wheels.Hell, they even have a roof! Why the Resistance don't use them as a transport? The Resistance has a great garages and can fix these cars,I reckon.Instead of this,Gordon has to drive some garbage without a proper roof,sides...I think the resistance could place the rear mirror or front mirror!
Damn,these cars are somewhat mystifying.

In Under the Radar, we saw a car being worked on by Rebels, why can't there be other garages like that elsewhere in the world?

We visited a garage in Episode 2 as well. There was a massive apocalyptic disaster, but that doesn't mean all the human race's mechanical skills were forgotten.

Exactly!
The coast in HL2 is flooded with antlions - why did Eli Vance constructed such an unsafe automobile? He could make a real speedy tank! The Shotgun in Ep2 is almost safe - almost, because it has no windshield and - we saw a fast zombie jumping on the car,it could crush the driver easily.
In the world where the life is survival,to drive such cars is recklessness.A good car lying just there has more potential.I don't believe Eli would construct his car from a scratch instead of taking a Volga from the Ravenholm as a starting point. He can't be such an idiot.

A couple of points:

  • Eli didn't make the hl2 buggy. Edit: not 100% sure about this tbh, I can't remember what Alyx said about it.
  • "Speedy tank" is something of a oxymoron and not very fuel efficient.
  • It's a game, sometimes ultra-realism is sacrificed for gameplay.
  • No the Ep2 car doesn't have a windshield, but I'm sure there is a pristine windscreen warehouse nearby that they didn't use :dozey:
  • Even if they could find a windscreen I wouldn't want it. Your pretty much in a warzone I don't want glass getting in the way of a passenger shooting or having it break and getting pieces of glass (even safe glass) everywhere.
  • And even if I did want the glass I'm sure the resistance has better things to do with their time.

Stop being an idiot.

Rusted wrecks lying around for twenty+ years ain't gonna run.

Well, the HL2 games take place during their breeding season. They may be a bit more calm during most of the year. Remember what Grigs and Sheckly say? They usually won't be too agressive unless they think you're trying to mess with their grubs.

If you're wondering why the Rebels make sucky cars,
And other science facts,
Just repeat to yourself "It's just a show,
I should really just relax".

It's a GAME dude why make a big deal out of it?
Did you wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat thinking all this shit?

And Irrealistic....
That made me lol

I think the car models in HL2 are irrealistic.

Thinking about it now, a lot of stuff is unrealistic in HL2. For instance, in that one dark tunnel with zombies some of the map lighting is provided by the the lights of cars. Lights that have been running on the car batteries, for decades, until gordo finally found that tunnel. But I have a perfectly simple explanation for this seemingly odd fact. There are little pink bunnies inside them that generate power by beating on a tiny drum =P

Oh,and - speaking of unreastic - Gordon never sleeps, spokes or sprints(without the HEV suit).
But I don't say this is somewhat unrealistic and should be changed.

Bullshit which would have been laid to rest had you not posted in it. Now retreat from this thread before I haul your scanner ass to the mods.

then what are all those handy explosive OIL barrels doing all over the place???
If I had a dime for every barrel I blew up in HL2, i'd be a very, very rich man.

Realism isn't the top priority for Valve considering the game is about a post-apoclyiptic future ruled by slug-aliens and inhabited by crabs that latch onto your head and turn you into monstroue zombies, with a mute scientist who was trapped in stasis by a mysterious government man being the main resistance fighter.

I think what's even more unrealistic is that despite the fact that the Portal Storms and Seven Hour War presumably took place in the early 21st century, all the cars that were present at the time of the invasion seem to have been from the '60s, '70s, and '80s.
