... insert what they call "watchers" into the public school system. I just saw the newspaper article in the N&O, and according to it a watcher is:

"An educated religiously-backed fundie who would spy out and advise school officials against homosexuality and the environments from which it permeates."

HOLY ****ING SHIT SOMEONE SAVE MY STATE!
STERN TELL CANADA TO INVADE RIGHT NOW! REQUESTING A PICKUP FOR THE LOVE OF GOD -- WATCHERS?!

Holy. Shit. I'm having a panic attack because I'm gay, and this is a no-no! Can you believe this? It's a public education system whose intent is to accept unqueried, undivided, diversified children/teenagers. I thought a school was a place of education, not a place of educating hate and discrimination.

North Carolina. :.P Did I make sense in my original post because this has me fluster****ed ... I mean, this sounds like Gestapo stuff ... watchers?! I can't believe this is actually happening ...

you're gay? I thought you were anti-same sex marriage ...guess I'm mistaken

anyways that's freakin crazy ...I'd demand that my kid's school inform parents before inserting a grand inquisitor into a classroom to spy on kids/teachers

the funny thing is the first gay people i've ever interacted with were in NC
yeah, this is definitely pretty shitty, which is part of the reason why i don;t go to church or really support the system, sure some of the stuff it teaches is good, but there's a lotta crap like this going on as well
i feel sorry for you, buddy

Religion should stay out of schools. I wish the corporate churches would stop butting into everything, its giving a bad name for religion to the people who are stupid enough anyways to not learn to differentiate as it is.

Fight it. Thats about the only advice I can give you. Don't let them get you down, your life is your life.

Whats worse, is there is already a list of schools accepting the program. I can't believe this is happening ... here. Usually these kinds of moves are made by combative extremist fundies in the mid-western states.

I'll try to find you guys the exact article online -- maybe they have it.

That is absoluetly insane. Private schools can do whatever the hell they want, but this is a freakin' public school. Funded by the government. Unacceptable.

That is absurd. Churches need to know their place.

Heres what you do.... walk into your local church with a.......gay friend...... and umm..in the middle of the thing walk into the middle of the church and start making out...
Just make sure I never see it.

Oh, hah, I'm in NC too, what school system are you in? I'm in Durham (Jordan High actually) and I can't believe they'd do that. I have plenty of bisexual and gay friends and this is a massive insult to them. I'm getting really pissed off.

... actually, at my school, a guy from some church comes around at lunchtime and tries to get us to go there, we just **** with him because our table is made up of atheists and pagans, but is that what they're talking about?

"Heeey! I'm from [random] church! We've got a special youth gathering to help kids accept Christ this weekend, would you like to come?"
"I'm a militant atheist."
"... oh. Well, you can just come and hang out!"

Thats the most rediculous thing I've heard in a while...

Seriously, thats the definition of feckin stupid!

This is crazy. Have a protest against it by not going to class (unles of course you're in an important year). I'm sure loads would stand up against it if a few people started it off.

Edit:
The state Board of Education's anti-harassment policy, passed last summer, does not specify sexual orientation. The policy prohibits bullying and discrimination among all students.
Why was this even passed? Like bullying wasn't prohibited in schools anyway?

"Homosexual activists and their allies are devoting substantial resources and using political power to promote the acceptance among schoolchildren of homosexuality as a morally legitimate lifestyle," the resolution reads.
I think the saying "you can see a splinter in someone else's eye but not a stump in you own" applies quite well here. :hmph:

my high school probably will. we have a lot of members of the gay-straight alliance club (though I'm not one) and they'll try to coordinate something.

Well, what with those good Christian watchers, and the devil, heathen, Ganster, gothic, gay, lesbian, pothead, and just don't care population at my school, this ought to be pretty interesting. :)

This is bullshit, and I'm a religious person. What a waste of time and money, could be going to much better things.

Everytime I hear that I imagine them in a star wars type war with bisexuals and celibate people.

What school system are you in Kerberos? I'm in NC too, Durham.

Why not get liberal and gay organisations to do the same thing. Get "Watchers" in and try and "out" the religious oppressors that have infiltrated the system.

You know, fire with fire.

That's a good idea. The poster should look into this.

This is an absolute disgrace. I call upoun anyone who gos to school in Carolina to form some kind of resistance.

Really this is terrible. Stop it! Now!

My way of dodging any interaction with my school's Christian Union is to simply say "Sorry, I'm the Chairman of the Muslim-Homosexual Union, I really can't attend!" and I never get a single request until they get some new recruitment people in.

That said, the school pretends somewhat to not give the CU any kind of special treatment, which is largely bullshit because they put their signs up everywhere. This is just completely balls to the wall honesty that schools are a place where freedom doesn't really exist.

Hmm, I hope this also heralds some larger Christian organization in my school because I'd have fun fighting that, tearing down / altering / covering their posters, etc.

Does noone else see the irony in this?

Isn't this the same state that happily harbored an abortion bombing terrorist for years?

But hey, keep voting Republican, America, and soon the entire country will be like NC.

Yes, well that's the problem right there, isn't it?

Churches think their place is everywhere. The streets, the schools, the legislatures, the bedrooms. Hell it even extends into women's uteruses! Everyone, everything, and every orifice.

zeit heil.

It's ironic that right wing extremists contend that homosexuals are manipulative and high-jacking the media to spread gay propaganda. Hah.

My advice is to organize your school's gay-straight alliance (if they don't have one, start one) with other school's gay-straight alliances. Essentially create a counteractive organization that will promote freedom of sexuality and choice.
By pooling resources you can act with a larger influence, spreading any costs for making posters or whatnot among the entire school district (they'd never notice the missing paper and stuff anyway :p )

It would take some planning and connections, but it's certainly feasible. Start with your school first, and then branch out later.

I really hope you can get something organised. Cos that doesnt sound good.
These fundy type christian groups seem like they are nothing more than fear mongers.
Give them a hearty dose of reality and they'll fade into oblivion.

What will it be next lynch mobs?

Ah but people who car bomb police stations and civilians in iraq are not terrorists? they are 'insurgents', right? But by DAMNED when they take away your abortion rights they are TERRORISTS. Big, hypocritical words from you Apos.
But hey, keep voting Republican, America, and soon the entire country will be like NC.

At the Southern Baptist convention's annual meeting, Rev. Bobby Welch of Fort Payne, Ala., was re-elected president.

Aaaallllways the republicans, isnt it. Well I'm a republican, and I'm opposed to this. In fact, the first line of the fricking article says

In another sign of their discontent with public schools, Southern Baptists passed a resolution Wednesday urging parents to monitor schools for influences of "homosexual activists and their allies."

Just who in the hell is in charge of your state, Kerberos? Since when does a religious organization have the right to pass 'laws' and have them enforced in schools? Oh wait - they dont. This is just fundamentalist christians venting. I'd not worry about it.

I hope so, buddy, there's enough of them though... :O

LOL, but seriously, if this was happening at my school, I would be majorly...angered. I know some gay ppl and I was definately fight against the oppresive church groups...

How in the hell do people get away with this sort of stuff now? We're in 21st century North America. This shouldn't be happening.

Ah but people who car bomb police stations and civilians in iraq are not terrorists? they are 'insurgents', right? But by DAMNED when they take away your abortion rights they are TERRORISTS. Big, hypocritical words from you Apos.
The difference between insurgents and terrorists is the state of the target. Since they are responding to a specific military occupation force and their (mostly armed) allies, they are insurgents.
If they were *only* attacking civilian targets and non-specific/non-threat military targets, mostly for the display of an ideology, they would be terrorists.
You could call them all terrorists if you wish, but that would be taking the definition very loosely, to the point where it could be applied to almost any non-professional military force.
It's only a word anyways, and calling an abortion bomber an insurgent makes no sense at all.

Anywho, this is really off the topic, so church is acting stupid, mmkay?
