What I want to know is, is there any way of finding our what cd key I used when I set up my account?

Its no longer stored in the registry, (that i could find, also was told this), but it must be somewhere right?

Any ideas?

I heard its still in there. Other places I imagine somewhere in the steam files, or cache files, or on the CD case/manual and/or box somewhere

sry should have mentioned, I havent actually lost my key...I have 2 sat here in front of me, one off my HL and the other from DoD retail. I just cant remember which one I used to set up my account, I have a 2nd pc I may set up another account for but would be handy to know which key is in use first.

You should be able to just enter one and Steam will say if its ok or in use. It has to cause nobody is perfect and everyone will sometimes mistype long keys like that. So long as you only do it once and if its the one in use it should say so then ask for it again, then enter the other.. Unless there's someplace to find it (I'm even more sure I heard its still in the registry somewhere) It's what I'd probably do

Try hunting through for "steam" in the registry, it might have been moved into a directory in there somewhere.. If I had it installed I'd have a look but I wont install it just yet, not till HL2

I'd doubt if Steam stored CD-Keys. Internally, all Steam cares about is if the authentication server says you are subscribed to a particular game on a particular account.

To get subcribed to any of the Half-Life games permanently you just have to enter a CD-Key, but that's all done server-side by Steam and you never need to have the CD-Key anywhere near the client ever agaun.

yea, looks like it's just gonna be a case of trying it and seeing, cheers anyway guys. :)

since your account(e-mail) is what is associated with the cd-key on steam, the cdkey used is not stored on your system anywhere(if you opened some authentication log files somewhere it might show the process of accepting the account/cd-key, but even then it probably wouldnt show the key itself.). its not in the registry either. BUT, if you previously had hl installed and then got steam, it asks you if you want to transfer those files and settings to your steam. im pretty sure it nabs the cd-key then too, because i dont remember typing mine in. so the key used in your hl installation is likely the one used for your steam account, but if it asks for one anyway(maybe someone else has a clearer memory on that) then there's no way to tell based on the info on your comp. You could still probably find a program that could nab it or something else, but again, if they use only your account and keep the key on their servers, you would have a hard time finding it anywhere, short of stealing it off their servers.

if it is the key from your original hl installation, do this:

start>run>regedit(or c:/windows/regedit.exe)
browse to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Valve>Half-Life>Settings>KEY

and voila.

or you could just try both
