SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Three CD players hidden under a cathedral's pews blared sexually explicit language in the middle of an Ash Wednesday mass. A police bomb squad was called in and detonated two of the devices.

Authorities determined the music players were not dangerous and kept the third one to check it for clues, said police Capt. Gary Johnson.

The CD players, duct-taped to the bottoms of the pews, were set to turn on in the middle of noon mass on Wednesday at the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi.

The recordings, made on store-bought blank discs, featured people using foul language and "pornographic messages," Johnson said. He would not elaborate because of the ongoing investigation.

Church staff members took the CD players to the basement and called police, who sent the bomb squad, Johnson said.

The bomb squad blew up two players outside and kept the third one to test for fingerprints or DNA and trace its components, he said.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, which marks a 40-day period of fasting and penitence before Easter.
Is it just me, or is them thinking Satan is hiding inside those CD Players, thus blowing them up, a little much?

wtf?

Why would the bomb squad blow something up? They are supposed to diffuse bombs... not blow up cd players...

I must admit, I got a chuckle and thought to myself, "I wish I would have thought of that."

Then again, I've always wanted to walk up to one with the ash thing on their forhead *WTF seriously* and just go, "Hey you got something riiiigghht *lick finger...wipe off ash* There."

Who knows... There could have been light brights with mooninites under there too. Why not call the bomb squad? rofl...

Why did they blow them up?

Oh i'm sorry, they are posesed by the devil!

they blew them up?? was it a typo?

Sadly, no. It was the intention.. I bet the churchies were freaking out, demanded they be blown up. The only reason it was 2 out of the 3 was because they need SOMETHING to find out who put the boxes there.

What's the worst thing that could possibly happen, anyway?

It's regular practice for bomb squad teams who deal with suspected explosive ordinance, to blow them up on their own means to render the explosive unusable in it's intended way.

So they must have thought it contained explosives or something. Not sure.

But, case in point, blowing bombs or suspected bombs up in a controlled manner is a very common practice in the field.

CD PLAYERS! So everything that someone just finds might happen to be a bomb? Blow it up!

I would like very much to have seen everyone's reaction when the music started. (Was it music or their own recordings?)

WTF.

DNA test CD players that played dirty music?

For Christs sake....

I swear, some people just have no life.

this remind me of that simpson episode where barts delivers papers whit the heavy metal song

btw why blow them up? cuz it showed "sexual material"?
them all the videocassete should be detonated too

even if the find the perpetrators what are they going to charge them with ? . noise pollution ?. this is a waste of tax payers money.

also... why on earth are they tracing the components :S ? . its not like they made the cd players.

It's Sony's new attempt at advertising.

"CD PLAYERS SO AWESOME, EVEN GOD LOVES THEM...NO MATTER THE MUSIC!!"
*Cue God bumping and grinding with Firgie.*

I can see why they would freak out... I can't really justify it, though... it's pretty stupid.

id blow them up for the sole reason.. i could. and if they blew up inside the church? man that would be pretty freaking awsome too! BOOM!!!!

I can see why they would freak out... I can't really justify it, though... it's pretty stupid.

There really is no justification behind them other than they just wanted to make them mad. But seriously...if you freak out over music, you might want to rethink your priorities. "But think of the children!!" GUESS WHAT?! THEY PROBABLY HEAR THAT TALK ON A DAILY BASIS!

Playing that kind of music at a church service on Ash Wednesday is very bad (I'm a Christian, by the way) but blowing up the CD players is taking things a little too far!:D

I always wondered... why blow suspicious objects up? If there's a chance there's a bomb in there, isn't that the last thing you want to do?

so...what are you saying?
I prefer standing at the side line, watching religions secularize than actually participating in it, because during this secularization process stupid mistakes are made by extremist religious people.

See, even the Christians think so!

RAWR!

*NOTE* hide nuclear bombs that can't blow up in suspicious objects...so when they detonate the object...
..
:O

fair enough!:)

they blow it up under a controlled environment. bomb diffusion is a very tricky thing its not like they can just clip a blue wire or something.
