CD-R Problems

Ok. So I'm trying to burn some stuff to a CD. I have 26 things I need to burn. Each item is about 228mb-232mb so I thought I could fit 3 per CD. On the top of the CD-R it says 700mb or 80 minutes but when I try to burn it I get a data read error on the third item every time. At first I thought it was that the file was corrupt but its not that because if I try to burn it to another CD with that same file and just one other item (that makes two items in total for that CD) it works out just fine. So then I pop a blank CD-R and check its properties and its says free space is 702mb. So I thought the amount of mb that the CD could fit isn't the problem either. I burned 2 items on that CD, which turned out to be 610mb and there was no error. So I check the properties again and it says space used is 610mb but free space is only 70mb making the total space available only 680mb. So what I'm wondering is if the whole 700 mb thing is a lie because when I try to put 690mb-695mb worth the stuff on the cd it never works but if I put less it does. Maybe I'm just doing something wrong or maybe the company lied about how much the CD can hold. Anyone able to tell me what the problem is?

Most likely it is either a problem with how your PC is setup to burn CDs or poor disks.
What could work is lowering the speed. If you are using 52x maybe lower it to 40x or 32x.

A 700mb disk should hold 700mb of data. If you are using Nero, it has a bar of how much is used and if you go over it is red.

But right now I have some 48x disks and they are somewhat old. I get errors if I use 48x but if I reduce to 40x or 32x they work. The speed problem I usually get by the end of the disk because that is where it is spinning the fastest.

There is a good reason actually to burn at a slower speed. It helps how well the data was actually burned in.

Otherwise I'm not sure.

Yea, I was burning at 52x so I'll try lowering it :). I have Nero and it doesn't show any red if I put like 701mb worth the stuff on there but if I look closely I think the yellow bar goes over the dotted line a bit. Since when I check my E: and it says the disc has 702mb of free space does that mean I can fit 702mb or just the 700mb it says on the actual CD-R?

different types of storage medium will have different methods of storing that data, so I wouldn't try to fill every single byte as you'll probably find things take up more on one than they do another.

Turning the speed down to 40x worked. But I have another question. I have this video file thats 700.1mb and I need it to be under 700 to burn it. Is there a way I would chop a few seconds off the end or something to lose about 200kb? Is there something else I can do other then compacting it?

If you use winrar to compress a video, you may shave off a few megs. Video is very hard to compress, but it would do it if that's all you need. www.rarlabs.com

Try Virtual Dub, freeware video editor. You can compress movies, delete sections, etc. Best freeware video editor I've ever used
