cd roms disabled?

well, i wake up, turn on the computer, see that my cd roms arent listed in my "my computer". so i go ahead, run virus scans, and such, and restart the computer, but its still like that, not even clone drivers(daemon tools) are listed. the only thing i can think of is that it has been disabled or such by some lame virus or something. anyone know what i can do?

A virus is the only thing i can think of. Or some bastard playing a prank on you and somehow hiding your drives.

but if it is hiding my drives, it doesnt seem to be working, for example, i put in a cd, nothing will come up, and if i try to play games that require cds, it will say cd is not in the cd rom.

Try this:
"Start menu" - Right click "My computer" - Click "Manage" - Double click "Storage" - Double click "Disk management (Local)"
Check your drives show up under here. If they don't, then they are prob not being detected at startup, although deamon not showing up makes me doubt this.
If they are not showing up:
Shut the PC down, open it up and re-seat the IDE cable that connects the drives. Then boot back up. Check the devices are detected at post.

If they are showing up, right click on one of them and hit "properties". Under "Device usage", check it is set to "Use this device (Enable)". If not, set it as such and click ok

alright, i didnt try what you said link, but i looked in the device manager, and it looks like the driver is missing, so i tried downloading the drivers, and it didnt exactly work.

Those images won't load.

My suggestion isn't much to do with the device manager, give it a try. At least then we can see if your PC is even detecting the drives.

Those scsi drives look like virtual drives. Optical drives shouldn't even need drivers. Right click on those drives and see the details.

nothing special on the details holydeadpenguin, and link, i dont know if i disconnected the right cord or not, but there is ony one thats deattachable, and its the power supply, and it didnt effect anything, still same

i was thinking about it, but the problem i was facing is what if the problem still exists? if it does, i wont be able to reinstall anything

EDIT: and the way i reformat is from booting from the cd rom with my windows in it, but sense it isnt working, i dont know what ill do

Does your BIOS pick them up?
Just hammer the DEL button a few times on power-up until you get to som ugly blue screen and look around.

Most likely a virus or something has corrupted something. Reformat.

Ok..how many CD-ROM drives are hooked up to your PC? Do you know how to work a BIOS and do you feel confortable changing cables around in your Computer?

I had the same problem last night. The only difference was I couldn't get my hard drive to detect.

Uninstall your real (physical) drives using Device Manager and use Add Remove Hardware to try and add them back in.

Also, have you installed any new hardware before this happened?

... I love mouse handwriting. Do you have a spare computer or a friend with a computer? You could test your CD drive there to ensure that it's not at fault. I save reformatting for the bitter end - only reformat if nothing else is wrong. Have you recently added any IDE devices (which would require changing jumper settings on the back of these devices)? If they are set wrong, you'll see this too.

Yeah I'd try this, but if that doesn't help, then a reformat should.

If the drives are picked up in the BIOS which you say they are, you should be fine.

Aaaaaahhhhh, i feel your pain mate. The exact same damn thing happened to me a while back, and unfortunately i'm not so sure there is any simple fix for it.

Cd drives don't have drivers as such, i.e. you don't have to load any drivers for them, they are plug and play type devices. As far as i know windows deals with the drivers side of things for cd drives and the like, so technically they do have drivers. And these can go corrupt, or missing etc.

The best part is when i tried to repair my windows installation. I got to the point where you are kindly asked to enter your windows cd....... which the damn drive won't be able to detect, because as far as windows is concerned you have no cd drive !!!!! So i'm afraid this may mean a full reformat and new installation of windows. Unless any of the other ideas suggested here have worked.

I fixed it, the problem was that i uninstalled easy cd creator, and i followed microsofts intruction, given to me on another forum i was asking on, thanks for the replies everyone
