Not 100% sure but I am pretty positive you can input the CD key to download the game. You should get a Dvd reader because they are becoming the standard.

Nobody knows yet what's in the Collector's Edition, let alone what components of it, if any, will be available for purchase over Steam. Wait a few days until Valve gives up the payment options.

Okay, people here are saying that you can download Half-Life 2 through Steam and you then can enter your CD Key when you buy it retail. I don't think this is possibly. Wouldn't it be easier to get a CD Key off a site and enter it?

Well the whole point to getting the Collectors Edition is to have all the extra physical goodies. He is asking if he can do it since he doesn't have a dvd reader.

a key from a site won't work, because there's only 1 key per copy of hl2 (which is bound to your steam account)
and probably keygenerators won't work either.

He was just suggesting he brought one, as most new games are starting to come out on DVDs. Its also a good suggestion as DVDs are starting to become the new standard!

Yeah, I just bought a DVD rom drive for HL2... well not just that, but it's what promted me to go get one finally. Wasn't expensive and was easy to hook up.

people keep saying that DVD is becoming the norm for PC games, as I think it should be, but is this really the case? The only game I can think of that came out on DVD is Far Cry... everything else I've bought or seen has just been on CD. Or maybe that's just the UK for you, we tend to be 6 months behind the rest of the world in gaming developments.

yeah, a regular DVD drive would do the job
i can understand some of the conerns pple have about CDs/DVDs but i sure hope there are both versions available.
i would like a DVD version personally... (didn't like that Doom3 did not have a DVD version) i don't want multiple CDs.. that just means i have more CDs to worry about afterwards.
besides, i like the DVD jewel cases better :dork:

I don't think I've heard of any DVD drive that goes beyond the term 'regular'. They all do the same thing, just at different speeds, and some can write to DVDs, while others cannot. Besides, nobody really even knows what medium HL2 will be released on. We are assuming DVDs for the CE, since UT2004 did the same thing. Newer games are starting to use the DVD standard, and that is a good thing on many fronts...

Dvd readers are very cheap. 20-30$
