9500 is a fine card to run HL2 on. Unless you got ~ $400 extra cash there is no reason to upgrade.

is a 9500 close to a Geforce 4 4200 Ti?.... or should I upgrade?

is that a 9500 Non Pro or a 9500 Pro ??? they should both run well enough, but the Pro would be a sure thing. it's just about a 9700

I have a 9500 Pro too.I just got it for my birthday in February and i dont intend to upgrade for any reason until christmas 2004.I find myself going through video cards every 8 months and it really wastes money.

Yeah, that's the best idea, if what valve has hinted is true, the 9500 will outpace the 5900 :)

I'm going for a sure thing myself, a Radeon 9600Pro 128Mb Ultra which I'm confident I'll be able to clock a bit. I can already run UT2003 on my clocked GF1 32Mb DDR with 90FPS so I don't think HL2 will be much of a match for the radeon (or so I hope) :D

Overclocking a 9600 Pro doesnt help very much, its crippled in all areas... Have heard of a reviewer achieving a whooping 125mhz overclock on standard cooling, completely stable! But the gain is still rather small...

You, sir, are a genius.

Just out of interest, I've got a GF3 64Mb. Not great I know but... Well... Will it be ok, doctor?

...but the gain on the memory will be all the bigger, since it's the same memory as on the Radeon 9800Pro (Quality Samsung baby!), which has been proven to clock quite well in some articles I read. And anyway, even if the core-overclock isn't that huge, what does it matter? it'll run just fine on the unclocked card as well. the clock is just a little boost :D

Any card probably from as low as a TNT2 will run HL2, but if you want more details and features, you need a better card. so it's really just up to you. Do you think the fancy graphics are worth the extra bucks? The game WILL play anyway, but it'll look uglier :/

I've got a Geforce 4 mx 440 64mb and I'm hoping it will be fine. If not, bye bye student loan.

I'll have to give up eating.

Same, Feath. I have enough money to buy a new pc that isn't my loan, but it's mostly from my grand-dad (mostly <in a Newt stylee>) and I don't want to blow most of it on something so trivial (and yet so important).

But I know I will.

a might facetious. i think, sir, you have been mocked.

LOL.

9500 should be fine. DX9 compatibility. i think that no cards released will be able to run HL2 with every setting maxed (i could be wrong).
And if your not completely satisfied, well, put up with it for a bit. It'll run the rest of the games out just fine, and when you DO get one, it'll run HL2 (the only "game-that-really-matters', right?) like a dream, including the first content pack.

I've been thinking about upgrading, at the moment what is the best possible video card available?

Is it the 9800 PRO 256MB?

well, thats the über1337-Card. however, few games really use the 128 MB of RAM on one of the newer cards, so the 256 would be unnecessary. I would wait for either the 9900 or what comes after that.

Hey, I've got the same! It's done pretty well SO FAR...

Valve said that after the release of HL2, they'll release a patch to the people with 256mb cards so that Source will take full advantage of the extra 128mb.
