Change setings without entering the game?

Can you change the display settings without entering the game?
You see, I started the game on the default settings and it was running a tad slow (only 256mb ram).
I changed the display settings to the one below the 800x600 (the default).
Turns out my monitor doesn't support this mode, and I can't see the game to change it back. :O
Surely there must be a way to change the display settings outside the game?
I even uninstalled and reinstalled it, but it remembers the settings, for some reason.

Try deleting the cfg file in the X:\...\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\steamusername\half-life 2\hl2\cfg directory.

Well this is another of HL'2 giant blunders there is no external grx edit or even a safe mode to run the gmae is they really didn't spen much time on the most important small details with this game its i such a shame. If anyone knows how we can edit from outside the game plz tell.

Ps steam can go burn in hell there the worst most anoying spammers ive ever seen jesus. This game makes me even want to go get a pirate copy just so i get my money back and get past all the steam BS. I just want to play a game FFS even just single player i dont want to have to go with all this crappy net stuff just cus some twats may pirate it.

I have the same issue. I've been able to reinstall the game and have it reset the settings, however. I made sure I used the uninstall outside of Steam... dunno if that'll help. I've been searching most of tonight and have seen ppl with similar errors. For now, I just am gonna play on my roommates comp until someone decides to fix this.

GeForce FX 5600
512 ram

To add to this... the resolution thati can't seem to get to work with hl2 is what i have windows set at, so I know my comp can handle it... I have no clue why this game would decide to be finicky over it.
