and sorry, but this just looks very bad. Like you got photoshop for two weeks or so, the bevel effect shouldn be used, or at least with SHARP edges.
The HL2 original orange is nice indeed but not with this faint blue ... well pretty much all about the header, the rest is ok for me - didnt changed much.

but the old header had real style, this looks just like newbie arts.

Whenever I look at the front page...god, it's so heavy and oppressive I feel like a 10-ton weight has just dropped onto my shoulders. I mean maybe it's appropriate, making the reader feel like they're under the heel of some vast oppressive occupation force, but it sure is annoying. :<

My new design for HL2.net (no, I'm serious - in a vague sense - I think we need something clean and cool and clinical, not bulky like an Amstrad from the 80s. The text is there because...well, you can imagine how much fun it is filling in all the holes in the letters that were already there with whatever colour you want to put in):
