if im changing mother boards in a DIY system, do i need to format? cant i just uninstall the old dirvers, switch mobos, and then install the new mobo drivers?

Yes, that would work, but make sure you delete all remenants of the old drivers before changing (especially if your changing to a different chipset as well).

My last motherboard change I went the non-reformat route but encountered numerous problems and conflicts, even though I thought I had deleted all the previous drivers. A full reformat was the easiest thing to do.

true, but i have a lot of stuff on my comp that i just cant back up (gay departemnt of education files) and i cant get rid of them because it would take to much time for my mom to rewrite them.

80+ hours of work for my mom=no good feelings toward me.

are there any programs that can totally get rid of drivers like that?

I hate to be negative but I have upgraded mobos several times under windows XP and it has NEVER gone well for me. I wind up re installing the OS no matter what. It's funny under 95 and 98 it was no big deal. The biggest problems seem to come from BIG changes like going from one CPU mfg to another or going from a reg mobo to one with lots of integrated components like LAN/Video etc.
you could try files and settings transfers or start with a new empty hard disk, install the OS and ADD the old drive along side the new one , then migrate over one app at a time. any way you slice it , it is ugly.
good luck.. and BACKUP everything.

You could of course get a second HD (external if you wish) and back up anything you need and then format your OS HD.
