children of men opens tomorrow in USA

It's still not showing anywhere near where I live, damnit.

I think it defines a new genre. It's not so much an action movie as a survival movie. The hero isn't machine gunning his way out of any situations, he's mostly running and using a lot of luck. I don't think he even hurts anyone except for the one guy he clocks across the face. I think everyone in the theatre was surprised by that. But it is still very tense and nerve wracking because the posibility of death is always there.

One of the best films I've seen in theaters in a long time. Thoroughly impressed. Can't recommend it enough.

Jesus Christ, how long were some of those takes? It felt like forever. How could they have choreographed all that in a single take and made it look 20 times more real than pretty much anything I've seen. They must've hidden cuts somewhere in there, I was too engrossed in the film to notice.

In conclusion, go see it.

The longest straight shot in the movie was I think 13 minutes straight. Its freaking amazing that they could ever get all that stuff to work right for one shot. They must have spent weeks planning and setting it up.

If valve needs to look for somebody to direct a halflife movie it should be this guy.

Ah this is the same director who did HP: The Prisoner of Azkaban. Nice!

Yes, this movie is truly epic. First movie I have ever seen that I actually SAT at the edge of my seat for the majority of the show.

The atmosphere was breath-taking. It sucked you into the story and didnt let you go until the very end!

Spoiler

Loved the part where you were following behind the main character when he was running through the abandoned train cab, he was dodging bullets but one happened to hit one of the refugees in the train and blood squirted on the camera and there were a few drops there for the rest of the scene. that REALLY made you feel like you were right there, with blood on your face. I felt like I was in danger right along with the main character.

Spoiler

Had to drive 2 hours to get to a theatre that was playing it, but also took time to go to the King of Prussia mall with the g/f, its huge!

Anyhow, definatly going to see this movie again!

Fantastic movie, I must say. And I agree with Deadline. Also, Michael Caine rocked in this movie.

I really liked the lengthy scene with the car. Quite breathtaking to watch.

Children of Men almost like Half Life 2
Do you think the director got most of his ideas from HL2?

Saw this yesterday. Definitely my favorite movie of the year.

Do you think the director got most of his ideas from HL2?

I doubt it. The post apocolyptic, chaotic world idea with terrorism and government extremism is hardly a new idea. It's not like HL2 invented it.

It's based on a book that predates HL2. So no, if anything it's the other way around.

The only real way in which they're similar is the concept of the human race being infertile and slowly dying off ... the rest of the similarities are because they both borrow heavily from the Orwellian concept.

my b0xx0rz where quite verily R0xx0red

-the gunplay was realistic, no wire-fum, bullettime, or people flying 30 feet from getting hit by 9mm
-the setting was gritty and believable, yet had the sort of hi tech advancements you'd expect.
-the camerawork was downright amazing
-the special effects were only used when necessary, no spamming the viewer with fistfuls of effects
-the main character does not blow shit up or continually spout one liners

the movie was perfect or at least close to it, they did everything right, i only wish it was longer so there was more to appreciate

Good to see you all liked it.

As you've probably noticed, this film has been getting very little mainstream hype etc, and has, so far not been tipped for many awards. In an effort to rectify this, the good folks over at Something Awful forums have started a grassroots campaign to get it nominated for best picture at this years Oscars:

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2267066&perpage=40&pagenumber=1

Its getting very big - already the campaign has been mentioned in dozens of blogs and is front page news on several websites, including sites that are frequently viewed by Academy members themselves. The accompanying YouTube Video has had over 60,000 views yadda yadda yadda. Check out the SA thread for details.

So if you think this film should get the recognition it deserves (personally I think Best Picture should go to Pan's Labyrinth or United 93, but CoM deserves Best Cinematography and Best Director without a shadow of a doubt) then watch the video, Digg all CoM related articles etc.

Also, UK DVD release - next monday!

I wish I could see it, but it's not showing at any theaters that I know of over here. :(

YOU ARE KIDDING ME?! Seriously?

Here I am, thinking how good this movie was and how much I wanted to see it again, and it's coming out next week?

Hooray! :D :D :D Bit soon though, aye? S'only been showing from our cinemas 2/3 months, and this is a big budget, well known flick, not some crappy movie that usually goes to the cinema for a few months then come straight out.

EDIT: Actually, is it big budget? I mean, on a general scale? I have no idea, but it just strikes me odd that it's being released so soon.

It's gotten just about zero publicity here. I've mentioned it several times and no one has a clue what I'm blabbering about. It opened last weekend in one of the four local theaters. I hope it's not gone before I go to see it this weekend.

Is it actually eligble for this years Oscars? Whats the cutoff for that?

If its shown in US cinemas during 2006 then it is eligible for this year's oscars. It think thats why they gave it a limited release from Christmas day, so they could sneak it into the running.

Yeah, no shit. It is out on the 15th, but its a very standard affair - no special features to speak of - i think we can expect a 2 dvd special edition eventually though. With all the technical prowess on display it'd be stupid for them not to show us how it was done.

Any opinions on the fan-made trailer I posted? IMO its a hell of a lot better than the official one.

I don't know about the whole limited press time thing. I've seen a but load of commercials for it plus little blurbs on AOL about the movie since it was released to the entire US. Oh and as for the similarities to Half Life 2, did anyone think the resistance fighters in this look just like the resistance fighters in the game? I thought that was funny.

Wicked. :D Buying!

I like special features, but I'm very strict when it comes to buying DVD's. See, with a DVD, I watch it about once every 3 months. I simply cannot watch something I've seen so recently again so soon. I can with music (hear it, even), but not with movies. Which is why for the most part I only buy DVD's that are 5 quid or less, so basically old war films from Music Zone or something. I will buy Children of Men because it's something special, but I won't go for limited edition because I bet alone it will be something silly like 12 quid.

I cant wait for the special edition. I want to see how the **** they filmed the car scene, the battle at the end etc etc. I'm a sucker for all the technical BS.

:x arg, there was only 1 place within 100 miles of me showing it, and it was some obscure theater in downtown dallas...I did not go, but I wanted to

I hope releasing DVD's this soon becomes a trend. I think the movie industry would make far more money.

By the time DVD's usually come out I've lost interest and didn't even the movie in the cinema. I might pick this up in a few days.

Not only that, but if they were released sooner I'd be much more likely to buy it rather than download it.

Anyway, spoilers...

What are your takes on the children laughing at the end? Personally, I think it's children at The Human Project, but I have friends who think it's nothing, which I find incredibly cheesy

I think it was just meant to symbolize the return of hope to civilization.

Saw it today, very raw, very impressive. The effects work was excellent and the seamlessness of some of the sequences makes you wonder how they achieved it. There has to be some Oscar worthy nominations for the realism going on there.

I can pretty much tell you how it was done before the DVD comes out.

Most long scenes were done with several takes. Watch for quick camera movements, usually pans or tilts where the environment has a bit of motion blur. They'll cut the shots together and use compositing software to line them up and perhaps morph the frames together to make it seem smooth.

Also, the 3D baby blows my mind. We can tell it's 3D, but it's very nice. It was rendered through Pixar's Renderman. I can tell you, I'm no stranger to writing procedural shaders through RSL (renderman shading language) and it's a difficult and arduous process for something so realistic and lifelike. My guess is that there was a dummy baby with tracking markers (usually Xs made out of tape) on it. The 3D baby was rendered and composited on by matchmoving the 3D over the dummy (locking it to the tracking markers).

What a great film, I loved it so much and will be picking up the extra special super grand awesome edition when it comes out.

Which is what I find kind of cheesy, but I was just talking to someone about it and they thought it was a reference to was the dreadlocked woman was saying about missing the sound of children, which completely reverses how I feel about a more hopeful ending, much more depressing

i loved this film. it was so beautiful.

the audience at the theater i watched at looked unhappy. the forum on imdb had many idiotic posts. i pity these people for not liking this movie....

Absolutely amazing.
I went with my sister to see it yesterday and I'm absolutely amazed.
The action scenes(in particular the car chase and the one bit in the city; I usually hate car chases but I loved this one) were brutal yet not cheesy. And the scene where they were walking out of the tenement with the baby was an audience tear jerker.

The only two things I didn't like was:
1) how it showed the soldiers as evil for a majority of the movie
and
2) The SFX at the ending credits. Unneeded IMO

did anyone else laugh when that guy got hit by the car door... for the second time?!

And that clive owen spent 2/3 of the film in slippers.

I laughed at that, and I also laughed at the final "pull my finger" even though it was so morbid.

Our entire theatre was lmao-ing when the gypsy was beating up Syd with the sledge hammer. I dont know why though. :D

went and saw it with 5 people today and I was the only person who liked it...guess my movie picking privileges are revoked for a while now.

I liked the movie, although it really upsets me that julia just sat there while the man on the bike pointed the gun at her, she should have reacted in some form or another!

Wonderful movie - its a big shame that it wont get much coverage here in the US. Somehow I was lucky to have one theater in my local town playing it. So far this is the best movie I've seen in 2007. I think with what this year has to offer in terms of popular releases, they wont be able to knock it down. I strongly recommend this great Sci-Fi picture.

Saw it with 5 of my friends on Saturday, we all loved it, must've talked about it for 2 or so hours after
