So... I'm going to see a Chiropractic doctor this morning. I was convinced by my dad and his new wife to go and at least get the free x-ray and consultation they offer Even though I am not convinced of their capacity to accurately read an X-Ray and provide medical recommendations, I am going to do it anyway. I was explicit in saying that I would refuse any 'tweaks' or manipulation to any part of my body. Subluxation be damned!

I've had the stance for many, many years, going on probably since I was 16-17 or so that chiropractic care is complete quackery. That it does not have a scientific basis and from almost everything I read had confirmed this, even though there is a lot of information and lobbyists out there that try to fight against it.

Got into an argument with my brother this morning, when I told him I wasn't going to get any manipulation. He asked why, and I shared my opinions and that I wasn't going to let somebody manipulate my spine and ESPECIALLY not my neck because of the dangers inherent as well as the lack of solid un-conflicted evidence in the medical community about the efficacy of it.

It seems I am the only one in my family who understands and appreciates the scientific method(which chiropractors reject) and science in the way that makes something scientific and gives it a good basis. The rest of my family(unfortunately my brother too, since I thought he at least had some stance on my side of the issue) think science is ridiculous and that something being scientific is without real serious claim. That it's somehow inherently 'biased' and with 'ego'. Complete ridiculousness when it comes to international scientific peer review.

<sigh> I really wish they weren't this way. Antiscience personalities depress me.

Anyway... how do you guys feel about Chiropractic? I am almost positive we will get some people here who will rave about it.

So here I am off to go get this x-ray... get it read by a chiropractor and I guarantee you he'll say I have vertebral subluxation! Vertebral subluxation of course being total bullshit! I feel terrible for all those people who I've read about who suffered vertebral artery dissection and stroke as a result from their chiropractic visits.

I've heard good things from people I trust. However, it would take a whole lot more convincing for me to let anyone near my neck or back.

i'd go and make sure he doesn't manipulate anything...like your penis

lol at "I'm going to see a Chiropractic doctor"

a real doctor would take offense to that. which is what you should see to determine if you something like scoliosis

just because they don't actually use efficient medical techniques and practices does not make them any less of a doctor tha.....

wait a tick....those liars!

"I'm not a doctor but I just spent the night at the Holiday Inn ....here let me adjust your neck for you"

I know a good load of people studying Chiropractics at my university. I lived with 2 of them in my first year of uni, and their courses seemed incredibly difficult. They had to do A-level mathematics (Even though it wasn't a course req.), and they learned a load of just general biology, not just focussing on the spine and whatnot.

So I'd assume that it's a legit thingy, but I haven't read deeply into it, so...

there's a 1year course at some chiropractic college here in toronto ...it's kinda like barber college but with more cracks

Okay. Just got back. Went in there... watched them perform adjustments on my dad's new wife. It didn't seem like she(the chiropractor) did much of anything with her. Then she went over to this other area where the shined some red laser things on her head and then on her wrist.

It seemed like a bunch of new age crap and it made me want to cry.

I then went back to have myself examined, seeing how much pressure I was exerting on each foot by standing on two weight scales. Laid down on the table thing, where she checked my feet and said one was a couple inches shorter than the other, blah blah blah. Took off my shirt and she ran this little device up my spine as I was sitting that supposedly examined my spine and it showed up on this screen where my lower back area was mostly fine and green(except one red area on the right side down low). Middle back was fine, but up in my neck was red and orange and shit. I'm assuming since I already labeled out for her that I had some neck pain(do to this swollen lymph node thing), she adjusted it to show that the neck was the bad spot. lol.

So after that she determined to just take x-rays of my neck. Got the front and back taken. Apparently I have to go in again to get the results of that explained to me(if it's not also free, I'm not going). Will not get any adjustments done on me, especially not on my neck. No chance in hell. You couldn't pay me to get it done.

Everything in that office though to me seemed like new age quackery, especially the posters strewn about. Those laser things were especially ridiculous(I don't know what they are or what they're supposed to do... but my god). The only legit thing really seemed to be the x-ray machine and the bathroom where I took a piss before leaving.

EDIT: Oh wait I forgot, she gave me this EFT(Emotional Freedom Technique) that seems so hugely ridiculous. I guess I made the mistake of telling her when she asked if I had any anxieties or anything when she brought up automobile accidents and stuff, where I told her I have a fear of driving(though conquerable since I have driven). Ugh what a mistake that was.

The chiropractor I went to wasn't all that nutty. He has you lay down on a heated massage bed thing and then pops your back, tells you to have good posture and charges you 50 bucks. It felt good but didn't do jack shit really.

Sounds like bullshit.

People who reject science deserve what they get.

The people learning it here seemed to be learning their biology from real biology textbooks, so I'm pretty sure they're not rejecting science.

If they're studying from real biology textbooks, how in the hell are they coming up with vertebral subluxation?

Well, at least chiropractors are doing something physical, not just feeding you water or holding magnets to your skull. There's a lot better chance that it's doing something.

By that logic I could punch someone in the face as a more effective cure for cancer than homeopathy.

I believe in it and all, but I will never let a chiropractor touch my neck or spine. I've heard many nightmare stories from the problems its caused.

BUMP!

I'm going to the chiropractor again today for a second free scheduled appointment where she will read to me the x-ray results... half a month later.

Who wants to place bets she'll say that I require immediate adjustments for subluxations? Any takers, any takers?

lol

I've always read things like the following, in my many many years of distrust concerning chiropractors, from various accredited sources.

Avoid any chiropractor who routinely performs or orders x-ray examinations of all patients. Most patients who consult a chiropractor do not need them. Be especially wary of full-spine x-ray examinations. This practice has doubtful diagnostic value and involves a large amount of radiation.

Among other things. I'm a bit saddened that my dad thinks it's the other way around, that you should avoid any chiropractors who do not immediately go to x-rays diagnosis.

Avoid chiropractors who "prescribe" dietary supplements, homeopathic products, or herbal products for the treatment of disease or who sell any of these products in their offices. For dietary advice, the best sources are physicians and registered dietitians.

One of the things this chiropractor first asked me is if I needed any dietary or nutritional supplements... when I was there on my first visit.

Avoid chiropractors who purport to diagnose or treat "subluxations," who have waiting room literature promoting "nerve interference" as an underlying cause of disease, or who post charts or distribute literature suggesting that chiropractic might help nearly every type of health problem.

And of course this was a huge thing. Everything was about subluxations pretty much. The pamphlet, all the things on the wall, you name it.

Anyway, I'll see how things go when I get there. Maybe I'll let her snap my neck. Haha, not a chance. That's strictly reserved for Steven Seagal if I ever meet him.

I was sitting at the eye doctor's the other day and they were running this micro-nutrient bullshit thing on their TV. I don't understand how people buy into this crap.

i have mild subluxation. my lower back vertebrate is a bit misaligned due to an injury long ago.

first i went to the chiropractic told him i have pain in my lower back. so he twisted my neck a bit and did something with my legs. but the results were none. oh yeah, i was ripped of 30$, and he offered me a massage for another 30$ the following day, but i never came back to him (lol).

then i went to a real doctor, he took a spine x-ray and he noticed i have a misaligned vertebrate. i asked him if there's anything that can be done and he said that the damage is too small to risk surgical operation. so he prescribed pain relief injections if the pain would be too great. fortunately i don't need those injections, because the pain is quite bearable for the time being.

so now i'm left on my own. what helps me the most is physical exercise, a good mattress and not doing stupid things to your back such as lifting excessive weights or something that puts alot of pressure on that area.

so now i do lot's of swimming and going to the gym.

Well... Just got back. Just as I thought would happen. I have SEVERE SUBLUXATIONS in my neck and degenerative whatever damage and need to be treated immediately! I can't remember exactly everything she said. My envelope thing is still in the vehicle... it's raining heavily right now and I didn't bring it in.

Subluxations... no two chiropractors will give you the same interpretation. There's no sound scientific basis for subluxation theory.

What was INCREDIBLY disturbing to me was the promotion of treating children. That disturbs me greatly. The video I was told to watch had this guy say he treated a child who was just two hours old. TWO HOURS OLD AND PERFORMING A SPINAL MANIPULATION ON THEM.

They're still nice and bendable at that age.

Yeah that's what's so wrong about it. Their bodies are not fully formed and it's so easily to do harm rather than good at that age.

Comments: Significant loss of supportive curve in neck with very early signs of degenerative changes all associated with a severe atlas subluxation

actually you can drop them down the stairs and theyll be okay.

my sister dropped me on my head and im okay.

oh wait

Go to another 'free' chiropractor and see if they diagnose the same.

I had chiropractic and it cured a major back complaint a while ago.

There were no lazers and sh*t...

All this laser and x-ray stuff would make me feel like they don't know what they are doing and have to consult machines to check.

I saw a swedish quack who just found points of tension in my back and popped them back in. And i actually felt better too :)

There is SOME legitimacy with chiropractor, some studies that have been done which showed some effectiveness when it comes to conservatively treating back pains, particularly lower back pains.

But when it comes to things like subluxations and most of the other stuff, it's bogus.

Man, I was totally and completely unaware that chiropracty wasn't just a normal and entirely legitimate part of medical science. Lucky I never went to a chiropractor (although as soon as I did I probably would have been put off)!

it's up there with sooth sayers, Phrenologists, Theistic realisists, and witch doctors

Yeah. I've been skeptic about it for many, many years. Surprisingly it's been one of the first things I've been so very skeptical about.

This was an interesting site that I had done some recent reading on. Interesting because it's operated by a long time chiropractor who is struggling to fight for the legitimate parts of chiropractic care and reveal the quackery that is so deeply intertwined with the profession.
