Matthew 5:17-18 (New International Version)
The Fulfillment of the Law
17"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
From my reading of the context; it seems pretty clear he's talking about the old laws of the new testament, such as executing gays.
Can you show anywhere in the bible where jesus claims that he died for others sins and this means people need not be punished for them??
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son."
There are also dozens scriptures in the Bible that explain the sacrifice of Jesus and why he did it. The above is from Jesus' own lips.
This is a scripture that is prophesied about him in Isaiah 53:5 "But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities, the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed."
EDIT: Regarding the law.
The penalty for any sin is death. The price a human pays for sinning is simply to die. Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." For instance, I'm a sinner. Only when I die will my penalty have been paid for. Bill cannot die for my sins because he has his own sins too. He, too, must die for his own sins. Who can die for me? Only Christ, who lived out a human life sinless and died sinless, could pay for the sins that I commit. The punishment from the law of putting people to death for their sins is already payed for. This is the New Covenant.
Romans 3:28 says "For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law."
Romans 3:31 says "Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law."
It's still an obligation to follow the commandments, and obey the commands of Christ. The death penalty for sin, however, has been payed for by Jesus. This is what it means when someone says "we are free from sin." We were initially slaves to sin, but now we are free.
