Cicada

yep.. I get to experience the joy of those little buggers :) We had alot last year, but this year it's gonna be REALLY loud..
Pity they take so many years to birth, and only live for such a short period of time

I don't want to be eaten by evil cicada.:(

Are they harmful like locusts?

nope, they arent posion at all, they dont even bite you. But, they are kind of stupid, they dont know how to fly, so if your outside they will keep ramming into you. But the worst part is they can lay eggs on you. Of course, if you take a shower regularly you have nothing to worry about. But im not going outside if these things are flying around.

If you mean they have manoeuverabilty problems then I know what you mean. I used to live in Ukraine where every may was a huge wave of may bugs(Melolontha hippocastani F., don't know how they're called in English). They were also kind of slow: if you see one flying you could just extende your hand to the side and it wouldn't even deviate and bump into your hand.:E

I also know that in the 70's Soviet scientist tryed to sterilize the mail gugs by ionizing radiation(gamma-radioation) so they attracted the female bugs wich(females) after couldn't lay eggs. It was rather effective(their population decreased to 25%), but the mail bugs were hard to find(even harder to identify who is who) so they gave up on it.

We also liked to burn their shell with magnifying glass - it made them explode, but that is a differenet story...

Those little effers leave their shells everywhere! :flame:

Yes, I remember these little bastards, back home I used to leave my window open to ventilate the room. To my surprise I would find little wings and freaking shells everywhere in my room and never find out what the hell did it. These things are ANNOYING. Stay away from them... and please, leave your windows closed unless you want to wake up with winds everywhere and dead insects lying next to you.

/me shudders.

Let's get some pesticides!!!11

I wanted to say that because my Science 8 class is learning about pests and pest control at the moment.

Ahh, they won't eat you.
But you can eat them:

"It makes things easier for people who like to eat them - young cicadas are said to taste like canned asparagus.

But curious diners should take advantage of the glut as the next monster swarm is due in 2021."

yum yum, fine dining coming up :D

I live in Korea, and yes they're annoying and LOUD...

Especially when you have a big tree right next to your apartment floor. ( ..me.. )

But I never had a problem with wings and shells and stuff.. Maybe its because

I never open my window when using air conditioning.

The steamed larva do make a tasty snack. I think they taste best in winter..

But whats all this about a 17 year period?

Was there a mass die-off 17 years ago or something?

Bugs are the real owners of the world. :hmph:

And the best ones are cockroaches. Billions of years from now, who knows what's alive, but I'm pretty sure there will be cockroaches.

Get out the flamethrowers and burn them all. Ah thank god im safe in the UK, I hate insects but i still get loads of mosquitos which i hate(not the bite but the bloody racket they make when they go past your ear, I can never get to sleep :()

Woohoo im glad I never go outside :p

And damn, im glad cicadaville.com is just a joke or the human population would take a crazy plumit lol!
