I too hope to obtain Civ4 soon. Probably for my birthday in a week.

WTF. This big technology sheet with all sorts of information on it... is in FRENCH!

EDIT: Someone on civ fanatics e-mailed them and got a response.

Just got this email from Firaxis:

Hi Rob,

2K Games has determined that a small number of units of Civilization IV
incorrectly included the French Canadian tech tree poster due to an error at
an assembly plant. They will definitely be replacing these at their cost and
will have information on their website at www.2kgames.com shortly. We
apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

Oh man, I love the african styled music featured in the games start menu... when you're selecting the options, etc.

Okay, gonna go play it now.

I'm so envious of you raziaar. Let a worker build a road and call it "element alpha road". And think of me when you use it, stuck here with no copy, will ya?

I got it, as well. This game kicks ass. I love how streamlined everything is, the music, the interesting religion slant, the total and utter lack of polution, and even the cool box!

I'm in the year 1390 AD. I'm playing on a "continents" map, standard size and an easy difficultly level. I'm the Japanese. I was in expansion mode right out of the gate. I managed to get about 6 or 7 cities before all the civs were shoulder to shoulder. Everyone ended up being on one big continent, I thought it was supposed to be several continents, but I digress. I'm about to start a war with the Incas.

So far I'm loving this game. The changes all seem to work well. From the new resources, terrain improvements, combat units and upgrades, religion and great people all seem to mesh really well.

The civilopedia is a tremendous disappointment. It's poorly laid out, uses too many graphical icons as opposed to actual text and there are next to no hyperlinks for cross reference.

The only other gripe I have is the graphics. The transition from 2D to 3D seems rather pointless to me. First of all many, many people are having issues getting the game to run. That wouldn't be a huge deal I guess if the graphics were actually of decent quality. Frankly I don't think they are, so in essence many people are being penalized for graphics that add nothing to the game. It runs fine for me, but others aren't so lucky.

Ahh well. I can't wait to get back to playing.

I never really liked Civ 3... Mosty because of the diplomacy.

"Give me 200 gold"
"Uhh... No?"
"IM WAGING WAR ON YOU!"
"OH WAIT NEVERMIND... Ill give you the money!"
"I want 500 now."
"NO!"
"WAR!"
"AHHH!"

Augh that was so annoying.

Well, I just got mine yesterday. A bit hard to adjust from Civ 3, but now it's eating all my time!

I'm amazed by some of the detail, like zooming into cities and whatnot.

Also the ability to ask one nation to make peace with another. Also, opponents tell you clearly what they like and dislike about you.

Awesome.

I'm still on my first game, on easiest difficulty, as the Mongolian Empire.

Every RTS is like that.
It happens to me alot in Empire Earth. :x

LOL @ Civ 4.

The Internet (a wonder) is represented by a picture of Al Gore

That's in reference to Al Gore claiming "I invented the internet" once.

LOL, I dunno if that's meant to be an Easter Egg or what.

they have lots of quarky stuff. example, i have the leadership potential of dan quayle.

I just won the diplomatic victory (via bribery -maybe :E) and I was told I had the leadership style of Winston Churchill.

But the problem with Civ3 is that the combat is COMPLETLY RANDOM. Makes most stratagies useless! And once they have railroads, its like impossible to invade them because they can zoom around, attack you, and then leave before you can pin them down! I just found the combat in the game very tedious, and the diplomacy even more so. Building up your empire was fun, but it would be nice to be able to do it without being constantly screwed over.

Civ 4 seems to have addressed these issues.

I haven't had much combat, but the riflemen always seemed to beat the archers and whatnot... you get a little zoom-in cinematic for combat scenes. Cities have % defences now, so you can knock the defences down to 0% through siege before charging in.

Railroads only allow you to move 10 spaces per turn.
Diplomacy is much easier to judge, since you can tell why people like you or not, and for what reasons. "Oh, you nuked us before! -2 favour, but we've had good trade for a while +2 favour."

You get more favour if you have the same state religion and/or civic practice as them, and less if you don't.

It seems to have addressed all the issues or areas which were lacking.

I've been really enjoying Civ IV too. On my third game right now (two previous ones are incomplete, but I was going to win anyway) and I've having tons of fun. Combat is great, worlds apart from the sorta... well, unpredictable Civ III system, although I could do with being a bit better at learning to balance my armies, I think.

Playing a terra map, I'm trying really hard to fight the barbarians that have settled in the "New World" part of the map, sending about 3 grenadiers every 6 turns in an attempt to capture their cities and make it safe.

Cities are somehow more fun and unique, now, too, especially as terrain, wonders and such completely change the layout. I've found it interesting to measure the ideal rates for new cities, too. I expanded really quickly at one point, and it completely crippled my economy for a good time, which let Japan beat me rather decisively when I was defending China. Boo.
