such as this.

Does anyone know of any bands that do this more?

that was really cool - gave me shivers in a good way, love it when media has that affect on me
nice find hazar

Ooh. I love Winter, rock or no.

I recently bought "Stravinsky - The Rite of Spring for Electric Guitar, Electric Bass and Percussion" by John Ringer. It's a literal reduction from the full orchestral score, i.e. no open solos, as ELP tend to do. Of course, Rite of String is a notoriously inaccessable piece, and being done in rock doesn't make it a whole lot better in that reguard. It did make Matt Groening's (of Simpsons fame) Top 10.

Tending on the old side, Emerson Lake & Palmer did a lot of this, including: Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition", Copland's "Hoedown" and "Fanfare for the Common Man". Woody Herman's band also did "Fanfare for the Common Man," but it is a big band playing.

ah yes, I'd been meaning to get around to listening to him

First band that springs to mind is Focus.

It's a dutch band that makes symphonic rock. Some of their tracks were based around classical themes but they also had some original compositions. Their music is a bit cheesy. Download Sylvia to get an idea.

I know that the London Philharmonic Orchestra did a bunch of Pink Floyd songs on "Us & Them: Symphonic Pink Floyd" and it sounds really good, but I don't know of any classical music done rock style...

Agreed. "Us & Them" is one of the better rock-by-orchestra albums I've found.

Have the RPO done two Pink Floyd 'cover' albums? The one I have is just 'The Royal Phiharmonic Orchestra Plays The Music of Pink Floyd'. It does, however, contain the track Us and Them alongside In The Flesh, Money, Shine On..., Wish You Were Here, Hey You, etc.

Too bad it was the only really good song they've written since ...And Justice For All. The rest of the S&M album sucked too... you can't just stick an orchestra into songs that are not at all designed for it. It doesn't sound cool, it sounds lame. The only reason No Leaf Clover turned out well because it was composed with the orchestra in mind.

And that's my mini-rant.

Not true, Mater of Puppets is great, better than the original perhaps. Although whether thats just because it is a live performance and not because its with an orchestra im still not 100% on.

hmmm, Yngwie Malmsteen is great for the one song I've listened to so far D:

Yngwie Malmsteen goes a lot of classical-type stuff. Also, the Great Kat... although I wouldn't recommend her. She's a bit... creepyu. damn speed metalists.

Anywho, I'm trying to get my band to do classical stuff like this, but meh :/

Us & Them is LPO.

Has anyone ever done Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata with a guitar and drums?...

That would kick so much ass.

Yeah Focus hahaha, can't believe other people know of them crazy dutch guys. Hocus Pocus is my favourite song, makes me laugh it's that good. I'll try your song too. I love classical and rock, a combination would be lovely, more!

I ROFL'd at that for some reason.

I have no idea why it just seemed so hillarious hearing that played on an electric guitar.

God I hope I never have to listen to that music become shat on. I could imagine some 1337 kidie posting what appears to be a link to something about something and then it's actually goatse :|

"Hey this kicks ass check it out www.beethovenmusicshaton.com"

His pinch harmonics sound funky, and he spazzes out on tapping, but apart from that he seems to be a pretty talented guy. Seems he takes influence from Vai and Satriani.

One of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's guitarists, Al Pitrelli, was from Megadeth. :)

yeah, I love that one song by Trans-Siberian Orchestra, but that's about the only one I like :(

Listen to The March of Kings by them, it sucks at the start but gets cool.

Hey, I just got a rock trio version of the Rite of Spring. Would probably be better with a full band--condensing a larger than normal orchestra down to guitar bass percussion loses a lot by necessity.

Still, I enjoy it and Matt Groening of Simpsons fame does too.
