Client update or Steam installers?

I just reinstalled Half-Life, and was wondering if I need to upgrade my Half-Life client before using the Steam cache installers. Will Steam automatically update it to the correct version, or do I need to update it via the client update first?

Yeah, Steam will automatically upgrade it to the current version.
