Why aren't there more co-operative games out there? I find the idea of playing through a bitchin' narrative with my friends to be a very appealing idea, and we are quite clearly in the era of social gaming, what with the popularity of the Wii and such. Yet I cannot find many games at all with this option available.

If you know of some, I'd love your recommendations.

Can't you play FF6 with two controllers? You assign different characters to the controllers.

There's always Lego Star Wars. Not even kidding, that game is kinda fun. There's also Trine, which I haven't played but it looks good.

I believe MW2 will feature some co-op. however as 6Three says 'Borderlands'. Its not far away and there are eleventy hundred billion guns in it (allegedly)

Opposing Force Coop is awesome.

Kinda fun? The game is a ****ing blast.. Lego Indiana Jones is awesome too.

Co-op gaming has been neglected in the past decade or so but it's starting to get popular again thanks to games such as Left4Dead and CoD: World at War.
I wouldn't mind seeing some new installments of the classic beat em up games such as Double Dragon and Streets of Rage. The new Tekken game is going to feature a progressive beat em up mode.
So, hopefully that will rekindle the people's interest in that genre. That said, there's plenty of upcoming games that will have a co-op mode. Aliens vs. Predator 3 and Borderlands, Lost Planet 2 and more.

Resident Evil 5.
My housemates played through this and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. From what I saw, the game wouldn't have been half as fun without the ability to turn to your friend and cast a wry eye over the risible dialogue and interface problems. Co-op really makes an average game shine. I don't even need to name the game I'm thinking of right now.

PS2 version of Half-Life has Decay. I've never been able to find anyone willing to go further than the third mission though, it's kind of poor.

Ye Olde Games that spring to mind are Streets of Rage, Gunstar Heroes, Super Bomberman and the Donkey Kong Country games. I hear the second Geometry Wars is co-op.

I picked this game up on a whim, and boy I'm glad I did.

Played all afternoon with my roommate.
My housemate had a four player co-op LBP game yesterday. I didn't play much, but it was genuinely fun enough to watch. Lots of arguments though, and certain sections really weren't built for four people at once! (the wheels in the Islands levels are hard enough for one person. Coordinating four people of various skill climbing to the top of the level, whilst the camera stretches and skews itself to fit everyone onscreen was excruciating).

Yes, MW2 has something called Special Ops I think. CoD has started implementing the co-op aspect more and more into their games.

Yep, so far they've had a whopping total of 1 game with coop aspects in it!

Anyway, there seems to be a resurgence of coop lately. Uncharted 2, Lost Planet 2, among the others that were already mentioned. Didn't capcom recently say something after RE5's release about how they believe that all games should be playable by more than one person? Which is probably why Lost Planet 2 has a coop mode now.

edit:
here's the capcom quote:
Speaking at CAPTIVATE '09, Keiji Inafune confirmed that Dead Rising 2 will include multiplayer, but refused to state what the mode would entail. "We’re at a point in game history that you need to have some form of multiplayer component in a game. Single-player alone is not going to cut it. So rest assured we are going to put multiplayer in the game, but I can’t go into specifics about what type of multiplayer as that directly relates to some of the game systems that we don’t want to talk about at this event. It will be online multiplayer, so keep that in mind."

Lost Planet 2 looks excellent in co-op. Dead Rising 2 as well :)

Halo 3's certainly one of the best examples of co-op done right at the moment. The meta game makes for a large part of the experience and requires an almost instinctual level of cooperation to do well in. I really hope ODST has something similar.

RE5's also great in co-op. Everything that's annoying about it in single player - low fov, having to stop and shoot/reload, slow turning etc - enhances the co-op game as it makes you more dependent on each other to do basic things. It's all about trusting your buddy to look out for you (I swear this game is responsible for 100's of bromances across the globe), which is what co-op is all about for me.

Like some of you guys have said, a resurgence of games like Streets of Rage and Final Fight would indeed be cool, but most of all I want some decent co-op action rpg/adventures. Something like Secret of Mana that allows you to share the epic journey with a friend or two.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for PSP is one of the best coop games I've played in a long time, including L4D.
